The Department of Applied Communication Studies offers classes in health, interpersonal, organizational communication, and public relations.

Our graduates find employment in careers such as special events coordinator, human resource management, speech writing, community relations, teaching, media relations, and communication consulting. The undergraduate programs also prepare interested students for advanced graduate level education. Our graduate program offers theoretical and practical coursework in the areas of organizational, health, and interpersonal communication. Programs are led by talented faculty who combine their research expertise with outstanding instructional abilities. The administrative office is located in Alumni Hall Room 3108, and the main office phone number is (618) 650-3090. Normal hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, while school is in session.

Designing for All Learners: Universal Design and Neurodiversity in the Classroom

When: Monday, November 9th, 12-1:15pm

Facilitators: Layden Cole and Josie DeGroot

Description: How can we create learning environments that support neurodivergent students while benefiting all learners? This workshop explores Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and practical strategies for making coursework more accessible, flexible, and inclusive. We’ll consider how instructional approaches, assignment design, classroom communication, and assessment methods can better support students with diverse ways of learning, processing information, and engaging with course material. Participants will leave with practical ideas for reducing unnecessary barriers, building flexibility into their courses, and creating learning environments where more students can thrive.

The Communication, Business, and Culture Program will take place in Romania between March 5–14, 2027. Participants will visit Bucharest, Sinaia (former king's castle), and Bran (Dracula Castle), engage in academic workshops at the University of Economic Studies in Bucharest, meet with corporate leaders and other professionals, and explore historical and cultural sites.
The estimated cost is $3,575 and includes airfare, lodging, some meals, local transportation, field excursions, and insurance.
Participation requires enrollment in ACS 416-TS1, International Public Relations, for three credit hours.
International studies majors can also enroll in INTS 401 Independent Project in INTS (3 credits)
For students within the School of Business, INTS 416 will count as an elective
For students within the Honors Program, taking ACS 416 will satisfy the HONS 320A requirement
