Medicare Open Enrollment: Learn the Facts and Plan Ahead 📅

Whether you’re turning 65 soon, just enrolled, or have had Medicare for years, join us for a free community presentation to help you understand your coverage and make confident choices for 2027.

We’re pleased to partner with AgeSmart Community Resources to welcome Christina Fulton, AgeSmart’s Chief Operating Officer and a SHIP counselor and coordinator with 20 years of experience helping people sort through their Medicare options. Christina gives free, unbiased guidance. She doesn’t sell insurance or promote any plan. She’s also an SIUE alum!

What you’ll learn:
✔️ How Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D work
✔️ Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare, Part D drug plans, and Medigap
✔️ What’s changing next year and how it could affect your costs
✔️ For those new to Medicare: your Initial Enrollment Period, avoiding late penalties, and how Medicare works with employer or retiree coverage

The SIU System Office of Community Engagement (OCE) and Institute for Rural Health (IRH) want to hear from you: what makes your community strong, what it needs, and where you see opportunity.

This is an informal conversation, and our main goal is to listen. We’ll briefly share how OCE and IRH partner with communities on priorities like health care, affordable housing, and workforce needs, and we may be able to connect you with SIU resources, community partners, and funding opportunities. Afterward, Shawnee Community College will offer tours of its facilities.

Do you show up for your community? Here’s a way to turn that into skills you can put on a resume.

This spring, SIU’s Office of Community Engagement is bringing on interns to train as co-facilitators for our Community Innovation Workshop Series, working side by side with the Lifelong Learning Institute. It’s open to any major and takes about 5 hours a week, including Wednesdays from 1:15 to 2:30 PM on the Edwardsville campus.

There’s no stipend, but your hours can count toward course requirements (with your faculty’s approval) or service/volunteer hours.

Deadline: December 15, 2026. Email your resume and a short statement of interest to [email protected].

Tomorrow is a chance to show up for East St. Louis in a very hands-on way.

Community partners are coming together to clean out the historic 1886 Lincoln School and help prepare the building for the work ahead. Volunteers will be removing debris, furniture, and other materials from inside the building, with gloves, masks, safety glasses, brooms, and trash bags provided.

For OCE, this kind of effort reflects something larger. Our relationship with East St. Louis is built through sustained partnership, listening, collaboration, and a willingness to work alongside the people and organizations already investing in the community.

If you have a few hours to give tomorrow, we hope you’ll join in.

🍂 Brooklyn is celebrating fall, and the whole community is invited!

Join our friends in the Village of Brooklyn for the 3rd Annual Brooklyn Fall Festival on Saturday, October 10, from noon to 4 p.m. at Brooklyn Park.

This free community event has something for the whole family, including pumpkin painting, pony and hay rides, bounce houses, the Hoop STL truck, live music, free food, resources, giveaways, and more.

OCE values opportunities like this that bring neighbors together, celebrate community, and connect residents with resources and one another. We hope to see a great turnout in Brooklyn!

East St. Louis, tomorrow is for FAMILY, FUN, and COMMUNITY! 🎉

OCE is excited to join our friends at the Small Business Development Center for the Metro East (SBDC) at the 6th Annual EMMAFEST Family Fun Festival, hosted by the Emma L. Wilson King Foundation, Inc. at Jones Park!

Events like EMMAFEST are what community engagement is all about: showing up, connecting with neighbors, strengthening relationships, and celebrating the people and organizations that make East St. Louis home. Stop by and see OCE and the SBDC while you're there!

East St. Louis has long been an important part of OCE’s work, and our commitment to the community is about more than any single project. It is about building relationships, showing up, listening, and working alongside residents and partners to support the priorities they identify.

On Saturday, October 17, there is a very tangible way to show up.
The Wyvetter H. Younge Higher Education Campus, SIUE Construction Management, East St. Louis Historical Society, City of East St Louis, and other community partners are bringing volunteers together to help clean out the historic 1886 Lincoln School. The work will include removing furniture and debris, clearing rooms, and preparing the building for what comes next. Protective equipment will be provided, and everyone is welcome to participate.
