JMU voice and aural skills professor David Newman spent part of his summer turning music pedagogy into play!

His new browser-based game, Pitch Space Ace, helps musicians develop a stronger sense of tonal pitch space through an arcade-style ear-training challenge. It's one of several free music-learning tools Newman has created to make practicing essential musicianship skills more engaging and intuitive.

This July, DMA candidate Denzel (Enzo) Abarquez had the opportunity to participate in the Wintergreen Music Festival as one of the LEAD Cooperative pianists! From Enzo:

"I enjoyed a two-week chamber music intensive learning from musicians based in various areas in the United States, as well as collaborating with fellow emerging artists in the vocal, instrumental, composition, and conducting fields. It was definitely an enjoyable experience making music and connecting with communities atop Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County, VA!"

This summer, Sydney Ashworth (BM '27) attended and performed at the American Institute of Musical Studies program (AIMS). She spent six weeks in the beautiful historic city of Graz, Austria, studying, singing, acting, and learning German. She had the incredible opportunity to sing operetta with a full orchestra, as well as other performances of chamber music in Graz's Renaissance cathedral.

On Monday night, our School of Music faculty performed for a very full house in our 2nd Annual Faculty Showcase Concert! It's always a joy to see what beautiful talent and diversity of music we have within the JMU School of Music.

Our School of Music students and faculty have been very busy this summer, and we are going to feature those cool things in the next few weeks before our performance calendar ramps up!

This summer, Orion Guerra, a Music Studies B.A. and Public Policy B.S. double major, attended the D.C. Trombone Workshop (DCTW) in their hometown of Wi******er VA, at the Shenandoah Conservatory.

Orion took lessons with Matthew Niess (former lead trombone in The U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own," The Army Blues Jazz Ensemble, and The U.S. Army Brass Quintet), Brittany Lasch (Asst. Professor of Trombone at Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University), and Dave Perkel (Towson University/Richmond Symphony) and participated in the Jazz Choir under the direction of Matt Niess.

Orion played in a Chamber Quartet directed by composer Frank Gulino and even participated under the Photography Work Study, where she got to shoot some photos for the program during discussion seminars and lectures!

Orion also got some solo performance experience by playing in an on-stage Orchestral Side-by-Side with Matt Guilford (National Symphony Orchestra) and Casey Jones (Oregon Symphony Orchestra), where she performed "Turandot" from Hindemith's "Symphonic Metamorphosis."
