The creativity of our faculty and staff extends far beyond the classroom. 🎨

We’re proud to celebrate Dawn Holder, Michelle Winkelman, and Orna Tsultem, whose artwork is now on display in the Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship Exhibition at Arts Council of Indianapolis’ Gallery 927.

The exhibition celebrates the 2024–2026 Creative Renewal Arts Fellows and the experiences that helped them reconnect with their creativity, well-being, and goals. From exploring new art forms and traditions to traveling across the globe, each fellow pursued opportunities for renewal and personal transformation.

See the work of Dawn, Michelle, and Orna and explore the full exhibition, on view through September 17.

Calling all future artists and designers! 🎨

Herron School of Art + Design is excited to host National Portfolio Day, where prospective art school students can meet with university faculty and teaching artists, share their work, and receive valuable feedback on their portfolios.

Students don't need to have a finished portfolio to participate. National Portfolio Day is about learning, asking questions, exploring possibilities, and gaining insight that can help students take the next step in their creative and educational journeys.

Last week, IU Indianapolis Chancellor Latha Ramchand announced that Professor Aaron Ganci has been appointed interim dean of the Herron School of Art and Design.

A member of the Herron faculty since 2012, Ganci is a visual communication designer and design thinking expert, whose work explores how design shapes real experiences, especially around health, wellbeing, and accessibility.

As a practitioner-scholar with expertise in graphic design, user interface design, and co-design research methodologies, Professor Ganci is a frequent consultant on the design of digital products and service experiences with scholars from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Computer Science, Liberal Arts, and Informatics.

In addition to his faculty role, Ganci served as Chair of the Visual Communication Design department, a Faculty Fellow for Student Experience Design in the IU Graduate School at Indianapolis and is actively engaged as Innovation Director with the IU Center for Health by Design in Bloomington, where he contributes to research focused on improving health outcomes through design.

He holds a B.A. in Fine Art/Graphic Design from Eastern Illinois University and an M.F.A. in Design Development and Research from The Ohio State University, along with a Ph.D. in American Studies from IU Indianapolis.

As interim Dean, Ganci brings a collaborative mindset, a critical perspective, and a strong commitment to Herron’s evolving role in shaping artists, designers, musicians, and creative thinkers.

After nearly five years of thoughtful, steady leadership, Professor Greg Hull will step away from his role as Dean of the Herron School of Art and Design and return to the classroom this fall.

Appointed dean in 2021 at a moment of extraordinary uncertainty, Hull guided Herron through the evolving challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with clarity, care, and a deep commitment to students, faculty, and staff. His leadership helped sustain the school’s creative momentum during a time that demanded resilience and adaptability. Hull also oversaw Herron's acquisition of the Music and Arts Technology program in 2024.

Joining the faculty in 1999, Hull has shaped generations of artists through his teaching in foundation studies and sculpture, bringing a spirit of experimentation and interdisciplinary thinking into the classroom. His own studio practice centered on interactive, kinetic, and time-based work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, and public spaces across the country, including major installations throughout Indianapolis.

Hull is an Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellow, a two-time recipient of the Creative Renewal Fellowship, and a recipient of the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ inaugural Transformational Impact Fellowship. He also serves as a Commissioner on the Indiana Arts Commission, strengthening the broader arts ecosystem across the state.

As he returns to teaching, Hull remains a trusted colleague, a generous mentor, and a deeply respected artist whose impact continues to shape the school every day.
