Herron Ceramics alum Alexa Adamson knows a thing or two about building things by hand.

She founded Alley Cat Ceramics, a community pottery studio on the near east side of Indianapolis, and co-owns Patina Gallery right next door. Together, the two spaces give local artists more opportunities to make, learn, show work, and connect.

We recently caught up with Alexa following her 2026 ARTI Award from the Indy Arts Council in the Artist/Activist category.

I was honored with the Artist/Activist Award as part of Start with Art’s ARTI Awards. The award recognized my contributions to advancing equity and innovation in Indianapolis arts and culture through my work with Alley Cat Ceramics and Patina Gallery.

After historic flooding delayed its August installation, Herron sculpture professor Allison Baker’s “Fallen Soldiers” has finally found a home at the Indy Art Center's ARTSPARK. The 12-foot, 3,000-pound sculpture traveled from South Bend on a flatbed truck before being lifted into place by crane.

“I want to build monuments to the people that never had monuments built to them,” Baker said.

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are highlighting another creative student of ours. Here is artwork by Junior Drawing and Illustration Student, Miche Hernandez. Take a look at some of their artwork and learn about one of our talented students!

Q: How does your artwork reflect your heritage?

A: Being Mexican, I grew up in a culture with a strong sense of community. A lot of my work deals with the themes of various relationships and all of the intense emotions and complexities surrounding them.” — Miche Hernandez

Congratulations to Robert Horvath, Associate Professor of Painting, on being awarded the Juried Grand Prize at ArtPrize 2026 for his installation Room for Lost Paradise. 🎉

ArtPrize annually draws artists and audiences from around the world to Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Juried Grand Prize represents the competition's highest honor and recognizes exceptional artistic achievement selected by a panel of distinguished jurors. The award also came with a $100,000 prize purse.

We are excited to see how his influence continues to shape our painting program and inspire the success of our students.

How does your artwork reflect your heritage?

“My personal artwork has large parts of Native Mexican culture who I am connected to on my dad's side and things like games, tv shows, and food that I had growing up. I also like to include Spanish in my work because it is incredibly important to continue using my native language, even in my work!” — Sam Martinez

Herron is so proud to announce that two of our professors have been chosen for the IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellows Program for the '26-'27 cohort session.

Danielle Riede, Randolph H. Deer Professor in Painting, and Jason Palamara, Associate Professor of Music Technology, are among eight IU faculty members named to this year's fellowship.

Professor Riede's fellowship project supports continued work on her "Wingspan" and "Venus Walks on Pearls" series, in preparation for a solo exhibition in Basel, Switzerland.

Associate Professor Palamara's "Another Lost World" reimagines the 1925 silent film The Lost World as a multidisciplinary performance combining newly composed music, foley sound art, live performers, and AI-mediated technologies.

National Portfolio Day is tomorrow! We've brought in artists and university faculty from across the country to meet rising high school students interested in a future of art or design.

Portfolio Day is a chance for students to practice talking about their work, get encouragement, and gain perspective about art school from real university professors and faculty.

Herron School of Art and Design will host National Portfolio Day on Saturday, giving prospective students a chance to present their work to art and design schools from across the country accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The event runs like a college fair, with students meeting representatives from the schools they choose and looking for the place they fit as an emerging artist.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Eskenazi Hall, 735 W. New York St. Students can register in advance through Herron’s website.

Students meet with faculty tabling for various schools and receive feedback on their portfolios, along with information about programs and financial aid.
Elise Velikan, an admissions counselor at Herron who graduated from the school and organizes the event, said the day is “a great way to serve student artists.”
