Congratulations to Professor John Manak in the University of Iowa Department of Biology who was recently honored with a Friend of Systems Unlimited Award for his advocacy and community engagement work.

In his general education course, "Good Genes Gone Bad," students learn about genetic disorders and human disease genetics while engaging directly with members of the Systems Unlimited community, who share their experiences living with disabilities.

The American Association for Anatomy recently highlighted Assistant Professor Katheryn Rothenberg of University of Iowa Department of Biology for her research examining biomechanics, evolution, and how animals interact with their environments.

Alongside her research, Rothenberg is passionate about mentorship and creating opportunities for students to engage directly hands-on learning experiences.

Two new Department of Biology faculty members are advancing research that could improve understanding of hearing loss and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Assistant Professor Cathy Yea Won Sung (left), supported by the National Institutes of Health, studies how immune cells in the inner ear contribute to hearing loss caused by medications such as chemotherapy drugs.

Assistant Professor Anne Martin (right) research focuses on how the brain forms early neural connections and how disruptions in those processes may relate to neurodevelopmental disorders. Her work recently received funding from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust.

Congratulations to Samuel D. Hunter, a graduate of the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, who received a 2026 Tony Award nomination for Best Play for Little Bear Ridge Road!

In the program, playwrights are encouraged to experiment with style, deepen their craft, and develop distinctive artistic voices that go on to shape theater and literature.

Faculty members Michael Ballard and Rebecca Clark from the Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures are contributing expertise to a University of Iowa initiative aimed at reducing barriers for Deaf patients in health care settings through UIowa American Sign Language Program for medical students.

Pursuing a PhD in theoretical mathematics takes focus and discipline, but for Dylan Johnson in the Department of Mathematics, it also means making time for family and life outside of research.

Supported through the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need fellowship, Johnson reflects on balancing operator theory research, teaching responsibilities, and parenthood while staying grounded throughout graduate school.
