Our Dean's Department units showed off their Hawkeye pride for Herky's Haunted Homecoming—and now it’s your turn to vote.

Alumni shared the names of faculty they remembered and missed.

Two stood out: Ron McMullen of University of Iowa Department of Political Science and Marian Wilson Kimber of University of Iowa School of Music.

McMullen's students may remember playing the role of National Security Council members in class or earning a geode from McMullen when they did well on a test.

McMullen gives this advice to his former students: “Always be aware of other people’s perspectives. Looking at something through a different lens or perspective often yields interesting answers.”

Wilson Kimber’s students may remember a fake kazoo concerto or a day of dancing to Jane-Austen era music.

Wilson Kimber wants her former students to know: “I always love to hear from people and learn what they’re doing. Come back and visit!”

For alumni coming home this week, CLAS may look a bit different. 🛠️ Here's a glance at the new and renovated spaces that were updated this year.

Health Sciences Academic Building
- The new $249 million building includes expanded anatomy and physiology teaching labs, a Food and Nutrition Science Lab, a Play Lab, health and exercise training spaces, and a Multimedia Studio.

Trowbridge Hall
- The $1.3 million project created an expanded main office suite for the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability, along with additional faculty offices, two faculty dry labs, and a new restroom.

Dance Building
- The $12 million renovation includes five dance studios with changing rooms and showers.

Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories
- Work is currently underway on a $29 million renovation, which will become the new home of the Department of Computer Science. Completion is scheduled for summer 2027.

Jessup and Phillips Halls
- The second floor of Jessup Hall and the lower level of Phillips Hall underwent renovations over the summer to become the new home of the Department of Classics and Religious Studies.

Macbride Hall
- A new meeting room was built with new furniture, audiovisual equipment and seating for up to 75 people. A second construction phase will add new restrooms, a second conference space, and an expanded kitchen.

Happy Homecoming! Here's a look at some of the Homecoming events happening across CLAS this week:

Wednesday, Oct. 28 and Thursday, Oct. 29: CLAS alumnus and 2026 Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal Samuel D. Hunter returns to campus for conversations about his career writing for stage and film.

Thursday, Oct. 29: Celebrate 10 years of the Voxman Music Building with student performances, refreshments, and a new composition presented by Hollywood composer and CLAS alumnus Scott Icenogle with the University of Iowa School of Music.

Friday, Oct. 30: University of Iowa Department of Biology alumni and friends can reconnect with faculty, staff, and students during an afternoon gathering and building tours. And don't miss the Homecoming Parade in downtown Iowa City, with Hunter leading the parade as this year's Grand Marshal. The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts and CLAS will walk in the parade.

There's something special about bringing a photograph to life in the darkroom.

Thanks to the Brian Pasierb Family Foundation, a new darkroom planned for 2028 will give students more opportunities to experiment with film photography and create large-scale prints.

Johnny, who completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular research at Iowa in 1995, has spent decades combining his scientific background with his passion for analog photography, which began when he received his first camera at age six.

Johnny and Caroline have already supported CLAS photography students with equipment, travel opportunities, and visiting artist instruction, investing in the next generation of photographers.

Your interactions with in-laws might be complicated enough for a research paper. Sylvia Mikucki-Enyart would understand.

After discovering a gap in research on in-law relationships, Mikucki-Enyart began exploring how uncertainty influences communication and relational well-being among family during life's transitions.

Along with research, Mikucki-Enyart enjoys mentoring graduate students and helping undergraduates develop communication tools they can apply in everyday life.

"Taking research out of the theoretical domain is really fun, but being able to help people in their daily lives is the most rewarding part," she said.

If you live in Iowa and get your drinking water from a well, you may be eligible to receive a free at-home arsenic testing kit.

Iowa INSIGHT is providing free kits to private well owners in Mitchell, Floyd, Cedar, Benton, Plymouth and Jones counties as part of new research examining arsenic levels in private drinking water wells.

Arsenic occurs naturally in the earth and can’t be detected by taste, smell, or color. At elevated levels, long-term exposure can pose health risks.

From Kinnick Stadium to Hancher Auditorium, Ani Perez-Brennan found plenty of places to perform during her time studying in the University of Iowa School of Music.

But for the music therapy student, some of the most meaningful experiences came from the relationships she’s built along the way.

Through performances, research, and music therapy practicums in the Iowa City community, Perez-Brennan worked closely with professors and peers while developing her clinical, professional and leadership skills.

“At Iowa, I’ve gained mentors who have taught me to believe in myself and have made me feel empowered for me to pursue my own passion,” Perez-Brennan said.

Here's to 50 years of treating nonfiction as an art!

Since 1976, the Nonfiction Writing Program has encouraged generations of writers to find new ways to tell true stories. This weekend, the program is celebrating its 50th anniversary with literary events across Iowa City!

On Friday, Oct. 23, Literary Legends will feature a talk with Pulitzer Prize-winning alumna Yiyun Li. The event is open to the public.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, the Iowa City Book Festival will feature panels with faculty and alumni from the Nonfiction Writinh Program. Located in the Iowa City Public Library and Prairie Lights Books, these events are also open to the public.

The weekend also includes a special anniversary gathering for alumni and invited guests, including a dinner, breakfast, and an "In Memoriam" event.

A top five national ranking for Health, Sport, and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa!

The doctoral program in Health, Sport, and Human Physiology ranked fifth out of 39 participating universities in the 2026 National Academy of Kinesiology Doctoral Program Evaluation's adjusted rankings.

The recognition reflects the research contributions of faculty and doctoral students, along with strong results in student scholarship, professional visibility, and graduate outcomes.

Congratulations to the faculty and students whose dedication to research and academic excellence helped earn this national recognition!
