Andrés Restrepo-Sánchez is a featured speaker at this upcoming Iowa City Foreign Relations Council (ICFRC) event at the Iowa City Public Library.

What does it mean to be a student in an increasingly interconnected world? How do experiences across cultures, communities, and countries shape who we are and how we see one another?

Join ICFRC as we celebrate International Education Month by turning the spotlight on five University of Iowa students whose experiences connect Iowa to the wider world.

Glocal at Iowa: Me – Iowa – the World brings together Nhelia Alemo, Ellie Godsoe, Sean Keene, Andrés Restrepo-Sánchez, and Harry Siraj to share personal stories of discovery, identity, cultural connection, and the lessons they've learned along the way.

Through fast-paced, image-rich presentations, these students will take us beyond the classroom and across borders, followed by a conversation with the audience.

Come listen, ask questions, celebrate their experiences, and support the next generation of globally engaged voices in our community!

Binit Gurung successfully passed his comprehensive exam in the spring semester and received the T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowship to begin fieldwork in India in the fall.

The fellowship is named in honor of Professor T. Anne Cleary, former Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor in the College of Education. Dr. Cleary was strongly committed to the ideals of international education in its many forms.

Baishali Bhaumik received a 2026 Stanley Award for International Research to support her summer research in India.

Baishali is a PhD student in Anthropology advised by Dr. Meena Khandelwal. Her research explores gendered labor, environmental precarity, feminist political economy, and human–animal relationships in the Sundarbans, with attention to reproductive health, informal labor, s*x work, and ecological governance.

Corinne Watts was the recipient of a UI Graduate College Summer Fellowship for 2026 in support of his dissertation research.

Corinne is a sixth-year archaeology graduate student under the advisement of Dr. Katina Lillios. She explores questions of origin and authenticity in recently created megalithic sites, specifically through the Indonesian standing stones at Harvest Preserve in Iowa City.

Doctoral student Kyle Bikowski was the recipient of a UI Graduate College Summer Fellowship for 2026 in support of his dissertation research.

Kyle is working with a group of Gaymers (Gay-gamers) in Querétaro, Mexico. Kyle’s project focus on how joy, fun, and play serve as means and methods to form, perform, and maintain q***r identities in digital and analog places.

Doctoral student Andres Restrepo-Sanchez was the recipient of a UI Graduate College Summer Fellowship for 2026 in support of his dissertation research.

His research explores the connections between reproductive justice, obstetric violence, and birth reform in Medellín, Colombia.
