UI's hub for all things international.

At the University of Iowa, International Programs functions as a catalyst for internationalization and a hub for international activities. IP administration, faculty and staff have the common objectives of:

- Internationalizing the undergraduate, graduate and professional curricula across departments and disciplines
- Promoting international scholarship, educational exchange and linkages with individuals and institutions abroad
- Enhancing the Iowa experience for international students and scholars
- Furthering globally-oriented knowledge and activities across the state and in partnership with the state of Iowa
- Helping create a community and society responsive to the increasingly global needs and obligations of citizenship

With support from the Stanley Award for International Research, Baishali Bhaumik, a PhD student in Anthropology, conducted fieldwork in India’s Sundarbans, exploring the connections between women’s labor, conservation, and ecological change.

Her research highlights the power of listening, connection, and understanding communities through lived experience. 🇮🇳

International Programs was pleased to collaborate with the UI College of Dentistry to welcome leaders from Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University’s College of Dentistry in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to Iowa City! 🇸🇦🦷

Last night, Associate Provost and Dean Russ Ganim hosted a dinner celebrating this international exchange and the opportunities it creates for collaboration in dental education and research. 🌎

🌎 From Riyadh to Iowa City!

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics welcomed leaders from Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University in Saudi Arabia for a three-day visit focused on advancing dental education and exploring opportunities for collaboration.

Dean Rahaf Al-Mohareh and Dr. Hala Ragab met with Iowa faculty and leadership, toured our digital dentistry and simulation facilities, and learned more about Iowa's approach to clinical education.

One area of particular interest was Iowa's innovative clerkship model, which the visiting delegation hopes to learn from as their university develops postgraduate dental programs.

The visit was hosted by Dean Clark Stanford and Dr. Salahaldeen Abuhammoud.

What does it take to bring a novel to life? For Writers’ Workshop MFA student Adam Schorin, it meant spending nearly three months in Berlin. 🇩🇪

As a recipient of the Stanley International Research Award, Adam researched contemporary Jewish life in Berlin through interviews, site visits, photography and audio recordings. His research is now informing his novel-in-progress about three generations of a family descended from Holocaust survivors.

“It is often hard to articulate exactly the kind of research one needs to do for writing a novel,” Adam said. “I am overwhelmed with gratitude for making this work possible.”

In this month’s Dean’s Letter, Dean Ganim highlights the University of Iowa’s longstanding connection with Kosovo, a relationship that continues to grow through partnerships like a recent visit from the University of Prishtina.

The UI recently welcomed five health sciences colleagues from the University of Prishtina for conversations about education, collaboration, and new opportunities for partnership. The visit builds on ties between Iowa and Kosovo that date back to the late 1990s and now span education, health sciences, business, sports, culture, and more.

With support from an International Travel Award, Associate Professor Frank Sims traveled to Iceland to help create Sextet Object, an interdisciplinary public art performance that transformed atmospheric data from a high-altitude weather balloon into music during the August 12 total solar eclipse.

The project brought together Iowa artists, writers and scientists with Icelandic collaborators, creating new connections and possibilities for future international projects.

For UI professor Elizabeth Oakes, understanding Edvard Grieg’s music meant visiting the places that shaped it. 🇳🇴

With support from an International Programs Summer Research Fellowship, Oakes traveled to Denmark and Norway to explore Grieg’s life, influences and Norwegian identity. Visiting his home and composer’s hut in Bergen gave her a new perspective on the cultural and political forces behind his music, which she’s now bringing back to her classroom and upcoming performances.

“I never want to be reductive as a teacher,” Oakes said. “The opportunity to truly broaden and deepen my understanding of the political and cultural history of a region when looking at it through the lens of a composer has been so invaluable.” 💛
