🎶 AN EXCITING FALL AHEAD AT UMKC! 🎶

Under the leadership and guidance of Dr. Joseph Parisi, we are thrilled to welcome two of the most respected voices in the wind band world to the UMKC campus as part of our Fall Concert Series:

🎵 Professor Jerry Junkin — Director of Bands at The University of Texas at Austin and Artistic Director & Conductor of the Dallas Winds
🎵 Professor Craig Kirchhoff — Director of Bands Emeritus at the University of Minnesota

We’re excited for our ensembles to experience the artistry and musical insight Professors Junkin and Kirchhoff will bring to UMKC. And we’re even more thrilled to share these special performances with our Kansas City community! 🎶

Congratulations to Jonathan Borja (MM Flute ’05; MM Musicology ’10; DMA Flute ’10; former faculty) on the release of his new album, Vientos, celebrating the flute music of Mexican composer Arturo Rodriguez! 💿✨

This project has so many UMKC connections! 💙💛 The album features fellow flute alumni Sophia Tegart (DMA Flute ’11) and Hannah Porter Occeña (BM Flute ’11), and includes Cuando Hablan los Vientos, a work that was commissioned and received its first performance at UMKC with the UMKC Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Joseph Parisi. The album was also recorded by UMKC’s own Robert Beck (BLA ’94; MFA ’99).

🎧 Vientos is now available on streaming platforms — give it a listen!

That's a wrap on KCCS 2026!

Participants engaged with inspiring presentations from Dr. Joseph Parisi, UMKC musicology faculty members Dr. Andrew Granade and Dr. Jane Sylvester, and former NAfME President Deborah Confredo. Their expertise and insights challenged us to think deeply about music, teaching, and leadership.

Most of all, we were inspired by the conductors, who led with musicianship and vulnerability. Their willingness to take risks, share their artistry, and grow alongside one another made this week truly special!

Thank you to everyone who helped make KCCS a memorable experience. Roo Up!!!

We’re especially excited to have Dr. Kevin Sedatole serving as our guest conducting clinician and Dr. Chen Yi sharing insights on her band music in a featured lecture. Here’s to an inspiring week of learning from these remarkable artists and educators!
