Join us in congratulating Megan Trafford for receiving the Southern Criminal Justice Association (SCJA) Student and Untenured Faculty Travel Award for her research on the experiences of incarcerated women in the Horizon Prison Initiative (HPI).

In their study, "It Makes Me Feel More Comfortable Going Back to Society: Insights from participants of the Horizon Prison Initiative", Trafford and colleague, Sarah Lazzari, Ph.D., examine the HPI - a nonprofit correctional program that helps develop incarcerated individuals with education, training, social connection, mentorship, and more.

Focusing on 132 residents in an Ohio women's prison, the study included an assessment on thinking patterns associated with criminal behavior.
Preliminary findings discovered themes of encouragement, social support, and personal fulfillment.

Trafford is set to officially receive her award at the 2026 SCJA annual conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this September 14-18.

This powerful asset to Kentuckians navigating , , , and more, provides support every step of the way - whether that's through one-on-one peer support, tailored trainings on a variety of topics, recorded workshops, or regular video meetings to build community - the staff at the KKRC are ready to meet you and build you up wherever you are.

Many staff members also have lived kinship caregiver experience, so regardless of where you are in your journey - your thoughts, concerns, struggles, and decisions will be understood and acknowledged by each of our team members.

We have been both thrilled and honored to witness the significant growth of our college - even just within the last year.

From our historic graduating class and our historic practicum cohort this year, to our DSW program earning Quality Matters Standards for Higher Education Certification and our overall enrollment growth - has seen steady advancement across all of it's programs, Centers & Labs, faculty, staff and students.

And now, through the implementation and evaluation of new student learning outcomes, we're able to measure the comprehension, quality and academic success of our students as well - and the results are outstanding.

It's officially Kinship Care Month.

This month we're reminding kinship families - caregivers who care for children who are relatives - that there are multiple ways to receive free support, resources, guidance, and access to a community of other kinship caregivers, through our Kentucky Kinship Resource Center (KKRC).

No matter where you are in your journey, there are people ready to meet you where you are. Whether that's through weekly meetings with a trained professional with kinship experience, regular support groups with other kinship caregivers, or strengthening your caregiving knowledge at your own pace through our online libraries, you will have support every step of the way.

We had a great time facilitating our Bi-annual Medically Complex Training Program over the weekend!

We enjoyed meeting the various families and caregivers who care for adopted or foster children with complex medical needs.
This training not only provides valuable lessons and trainings for caregivers to further advance their knowledge and skills, but it also provides a way for families to meet one another and share experiences, offer advice, and find community.

Thank you to all of our staff members who came out to facilitate the event and support families from all across the Commonwealth.
