Congratulations to Dr. Amanda Kis and Dr. Bradley Illston for both winning Alternative Textbook Grants from OU! These grants will help both make the textbooks and resources they wrote more accessible for students enrolled in their respective classes. The goal of this grant aims to help lower the cost of course materials for students, and help them succeed more in their classes.

In addition to serving as a GLASS Panel member, Dr. Chenghao Wang also is a co-lead of the Anthropogenic and Urban Influences Working Group. In this position, he helps coordinate international research on how urbanization and other human modifications of the land surface affect weather, climate, and land-atmosphere interactions, as well as how these processes can be better represented in models.

Recently, graduate students Kelly Geiger and Christian McGinty each won the award for Best Oral Presentation at the joint Weather Analysis and Forecasting (WAF) and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) conferences which were apart of the AMS Summit in Madison, Wisconsin! Christian’s work detailed forecasting methods that can be used to predict where tornadoes and flash floods may occur simultaneously. Kelly’s research compared the environments behind extreme rainfall events using composites and self-organizing maps.

Congratulations to juniors Josie Kilgore and Tori Pham for being selected to participate in the NOAA Hollings Program! This summer, both of them attended orientation in Silver Spring, Maryland, where they learned more about the program and what projects they can participate in! We can’t wait to see what work they will both do in their internships next summer!
