Serving three colleges and 15,000 citizens – and a population that swells to over 100,000 during a football game – the members of the University of Notre Dame Fire Department (NDFD) devote a significant portion of their lives by working 24 hours shifts to safeguard the Notre Dame Community. As a full service life-safety agency, NDFD is a vital component of the University’s mission to provide a safe environment for our faculty, staff, students and visitors. Serving since 1879, NDFD has evolved from volunteers responding when the alarm sounded to a professional department that seeks to prevent fires through public education, fire code inspections, fire protection system maintenance, as well as, being trained and equipped in order to be able to respond to the 1500 calls for service we receive annually.

Welcome Firefighter Vance Woods to the University of Notre Dame Fire Department!

Vance Woods joined the University of Notre Dame Fire Department as an on-call firefighter in February 2022 and became a full-time firefighter this fall.

His passion for helping others has shaped a career centered on service through firefighting, emergency medicine, and the Army National Guard. His military experience includes specialized training as a Medic and Firefinder Radar Operator, backed by extensive emergency and trauma-care experience.

Vance earned his bachelor’s degree from Columbia Southern University while balancing his military and fire service commitments. He holds multiple fire service certifications, including Hazmat Technician, Fire Officer II, and Fire Inspector, alongside extensive EMS training.

Vance values teamwork, mentorship, and serving others and is proud to bring his experience and commitment to the Notre Dame community.

Cooking is a leading cause of dorm fires, so remember to stay in the kitchen while cooking, keep smoke alarms enabled, know two ways out of your residence, and charge devices safely.

What does hands-on training look like for your NDFD crew?

Last week, we got outside near the Basilica to train Notre Dame staff on proper fire extinguisher techniques. Making sure our campus partners are prepared isn’t just good practice; it's a vital part of keeping Notre Dame safe.
