As a full service life-safety agency, NDFD is a vital component of the University’s mission to provide a safe environment for our faculty, staff, students and visitors. Serving since 1879, NDFD has evolved from volunteers responding when the alarm sounded to a professional department that seeks to prevent fires through public education, fire code inspections, fire protection system maintenance, as well as, being trained and equipped in order to be able to respond to the 1500 calls for service we receive annually.

When thunder roars, go indoors! 🌩️

It’s National Lightning Safety Awareness Week, and our police officers and fire crews want to make sure everyone stays safe during our summer storm season.

We see it all the time: a storm is rolling in, but people try to squeeze in one last outdoor activity. Here is the reality: lightning can strike from up to 10 miles away, long before the first drop of rain even hits the ground. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck.

Please remember these quick rules next time a storm catches you off guard:

❌ Avoid temporary shelter: Trees, picnic gazebos, and open carports do not protect you.
✅ Find real shelter: Head inside a sturdy, fully enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle with the windows rolled up.
⏳ Wait it out: Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last rumble of thunder.

The second a sensor detects smoke, even if it is just a heavily charred Bagel Bite, the system pinpoints the exact room number and alerts our crew instantly.

🛑 Keep Body Parts Away from Lit Fireworks
🐶 Keep an Eye on Children and Pets at All Times
📍 Choose a Safe, Smart Spot
🪣 Soak Spent Fireworks Before Tossing

Captain Sean Killelea started with NDFD as an on-call firefighter for four years before coming on full-time in 2017. He moved up to Captain in 2021, but his roots in local fire service go all the way back to 1999 when he volunteered with Clay Fire Territory. He even spent some time fighting fires down in Florida before returning home to Indiana.

Lately, Captain Killelea has been working on his Technical Rescue Certifications. He is part of the university's MABAS 201 Technical Rescue Team, meaning he is trained for the toughest, most complex rescue situations imaginable.

When the uniform comes off, Sean is all about the outdoors.

Did you know that the NDFD crew trains for high-angle rescues using the unique infrastructure of our own historic campus buildings? We practice specialized rope rescues and ladder placements on the steep roofs and towers right here at Notre Dame.

We are keeping a close eye on the radar. Summer on campus is usually quiet. But a line of severe summer storms is likely to head straight for South Bend this afternoon and this evening.

We need everyone to stay weather aware. A watch means the ingredients are there for bad weather, so you should keep your eyes open. A warning means it is happening right now, so you need to get inside a building immediately.

Meet Technician Nicholas Kovach. Nick joined NDFD back in March 2017 after spending sixteen years in the fire protection industry.

He is a certified expert in fire alarm inspection and testing, which means he is the reason our safety systems are always locked in and ready to protect you.

Next time you see one of our big red NDFD engines driving past the Golden Dome, take a look at the back.

Did you know that a standard NDFD fire engine carries more than 1,500 feet of hose? That is longer than four entire football fields stretched end-to-end. If we ever need to pump water at maximum capacity, we can completely empty our 500-gallon on-board booster tank in just 20 seconds flat.

Lieutenant Corey Cole has been in the fire service since 2010. He started out volunteering over at Baugo Fire Department and eventually brought his talents to campus in June 2017.

He earned his promotion to Lieutenant in 2021, and he is a fully certified Fire Investigator. If a mystery needs solving on campus, Corey is on it.

But when he does get some downtime, it is all about family and projects. He and his wife Jessica have been married since 2008, and they spend their weekends keeping up with their kids.
