We had a wonderful turnout at the second annual Beauty of Understanding Showcase and Reception tonight. Attendees included Notre Dame alumni from the Class of 1956!

The Beauty of Understanding was inspired by Notre Dame Ph.D. candidate Amandhi Mathews. During a time when she was struggling to find meaning in her work, a seminar challenged her to consider the role of beauty in scientific discovery. The idea transformed her perspective and inspired her to share it with fellow graduate students. From that spark, the Beauty of Understanding was born.

This year, 21 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars shared what they find beautiful in their research, scholarship, and creative work. Exhibits ranged from artistic portraits of zebrafish and insects to a segment from a capstone choral recital, revealing the beauty that can be found across disciplines.

We’ll be sharing interviews, photos, and a feature story about the event in the days ahead.

Big congratulations to our NSF GRFP award winners and honorable mentions! Since 1952, this fellowship program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, including STEM education. As the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the GRFP has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers. These graduate students represent the next generation of researchers and innovators whose work is helping build a better world, and we're excited to see what they accomplish next!

We also want to encourage our graduate students: apply, apply, apply! Students from Notre Dame win national grants and fellowships every year, and next time it could be you. Schedule an appointment with the Grants & Fellowships Office so we can help you build the best application possible.

The Beauty of Understanding Showcase invites researchers to share something we don't often associate with academic work: beauty.

What do a conductor, a scientist, an engineer, and an artist have in common?

They're all searching for understanding—and finding beauty along the way.

Join the Graduate School for the Beauty of Understanding Showcase and reception on June 4 from 4–6 p.m. at Jordan Hall of Science and discover beauty in places you might never expect.

Through music, art, science, and scholarship, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars will share the discoveries, connections, and moments of wonder that have shaped their work.

Please help us welcome this year’s Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) cohort! Twenty students from all over the world will be living and doing research at Notre Dame for the next 10 weeks. The idea is to inspire students to pursue graduate school and provide them with a clear roadmap to get there. The students chosen this year are from places like Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Texas, New York, Nepal, and more. And for the first time, SROP has a student exploring the Master of Fine Arts program—a new partnership this year.

Congratulations to this summer’s cohort and welcome to the Graduate School!

As the Graduate School celebrates the Class of 2026, four Notre Dame graduate students are reflecting on the experiences, challenges, friendships, and moments that shaped their time under the Golden Dome—and what comes next.

From postdoctoral research and industry roles to public service and community impact, their paths may look different, but they share a common goal: using what they’ve learned at Notre Dame to make a meaningful difference through their work.

Read their stories:

For many, college graduation is a reflective and emotional milestone. It's the close of a chapter shaped by hard work, new life experiences, and lasting friendships. For graduate students, the feeling often runs even deeper. Many describe it as finally setting down a weight they have carried for yea...
