Brown Pre-College Student Takeover: Isa '26

"Hi! I'm Isa and I'm a rising junior from Texas. This past summer I took the Course-Based Research Experience course, 'Fermentation Frontiers: Adventures in Wild Yeast Identification.'

I conducted independent research comparing wild and laboratory yeast to determine how each responded to oxidative stress and whether wild yeast could serve as a model organism in place of domesticated yeast. Through my project, I discovered that wild yeast populations vary tremendously, making them much less consistent than laboratory strains for research. I also learned how oxidative stress is connected to disease and how antioxidants can help protect cells from damage, giving me a broader understanding of why yeast is such a valuable model organism in biological research. This experience taught me how to ask meaningful scientific questions, analyze experimental data, and appreciate the importance of reproducibility in research.

My biggest takeaway from Brown Pre-College is that it’s up to you to make the most of every opportunity you’re given. Whether it was conducting research in the lab, attending office hours, exploring campus or spending time with new friends, I realized that the experience is what you choose to make of it."

Today is recognized by Brown University as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Brown University is located in Providence, Rhode Island, on lands that are within the ancestral homelands of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. The Narragansett Indian Tribe, whose ancestors stewarded these lands with great care, continues as a sovereign nation today. We commit to working together to honor our past and build our future with truth.

Did you know that in our program, BELL: Alaska, instructors invite students to reflect on how Indigenous perspectives—particularly Traditional Ecological Knowledge—can enrich our understanding of the natural world? To deepen this connection, students and staff visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center (), pictured, to engage directly with the vibrant history, culture and active traditions of Alaska Native peoples.

We ⚓ Rhode Island!

For National Rhode Island Day, we're celebrating the Ocean State and the place Brown Pre-College calls home.

Imagine a summer of college-level learning surrounded by Providence's arts, culture and creative energy; an astounding coastline, green parks and history all packed into the smallest state.

Fun Fact: Rhode Island covers an area of 1,214 square miles and shared a state water border with New York.
