Growing up between San Diego and Tijuana, Derek Czapek MPA ‘26 learned early that many public challenges don’t stop at national borders. 🌎

As a lifeguard on the San Diego coast, he watched pollution from the Tijuana River watershed affect local beaches again and again. That raised a question for him: What stands between recognizing a problem and actually solving it?

At the Watson School, he found the tools to answer it. Now an associate consultant at Bain & Company, Czapek reflects on how his MPA taught him to ask more precise questions.
