The University of Alabama System is Alabama’s largest higher education enterprise, comprised of three dynamic research universities - The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville - as well as the world-class UAB Health System. Committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, the UA System is the state's largest employer and a major driver for economic, intellectual, and cultural growth. The overall economic impact of the UA System exceeds $15 billion a year, but the true impact of these institutions extends far beyond any financial measurement. Established in 1969, the UA System is governed by the Board of Trustees. This structure provides for a definitive, orderly form of governance, and secures and continues responsive, progressive, and superior institutions of higher education.

Breaking news: UAB has accepted an invitation to join the Association of American Universities, securing UAB’s place among the most prominent and impactful institutions of higher education and research in the United States and Canada. UAB is the first and only AAU member in Alabama.

The AAU last added members in 2023 and, with the addition of UAB and Georgetown University this week, has 73 members on the edge of innovation, scholarship and solutions that contribute to scientific progress, economic development, security and well-being.

The University of Alabama System is growing its Office of External Affairs with the additions of Brennan Johnson as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Federal Affairs and Kyle South as Assistant Vice Chancellor for State Affairs.

Both bring extensive experience in government, public policy and stakeholder engagement and will help advance System priorities, foster relationships with policymakers and support the teaching, research, service and health care missions of our universities and health system.

Alabama’s prominent role in America’s space mission is growing, and the University of Alabama System is helping lead the way.

Across The University of Alabama in Huntsville, The University of Alabama, and UAB - The University of Alabama at Birmingham, students, faculty and researchers are fueling scientific discovery, supporting NASA missions and strengthening Alabama’s aerospace workforce.

Researchers are advancing spacecraft propulsion that could shorten travel to Mars, mission-design software supporting NASA’s Artemis program, and technologies that will support long-duration space exploration, while students are gaining premier education and hands-on experience designing rockets, rovers and satellites for the missions and industries of tomorrow.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees named Karen P. Brooks Trustee Emerita during its annual meeting, honoring her 21 years of dedicated service to our institutions and the state of Alabama.

Brooks was the first woman in history to serve as the Board’s President Pro Tempore and played a key role in some of the UA System's most significant leadership searches and strategic decisions. At the meeting, her fellow trustees and colleagues reflected on her legacy of distinguished leadership, steadfast belief in elevating others, and enduring impact on the Board and the UA System.
