Erika Garrett’s journey has come full circle! After attending Tyler Junior College from 2009–2011, Erika earned her BFA from UT Tyler in 2013 and MFA from the University of Houston in 2017. She credits TJC, especially art professor and mentor Derrick White, with helping her discover what it means to be an artist. As she shared, “Just making something and thinking about it meant you are doing it!”
Since graduate school, Erika has taught art at several colleges and universities while continuing to create her own work and stay involved in Houston’s art community. Now, she’s returning to TJC as an adjunct art professor, bringing her experience, creativity and passion for teaching to the next generation of artists. As TJC celebrates 100 years of transforming lives, Erika’s story highlights the lasting impact of mentorship and the opportunities that begin right here at TJC. Welcome back to the TJC family, Erika!
