⏪WEEKEND RECAP!🤭🤍🤏🏽

The leadership of REFA UFH attended the EC+WC REFA Regional Workshop. This was a transformative gathering where student leaders from across different chapters came together to reflect on the future of economics practice and education, and our role in reshaping it. Through this interactive 2-day workshop, we explored how different actors in the economy such as labour, government, businesses, shareholders, and communities interact and influence real-world outcomes.

We also learned how to use various planning and facilitation tool to engage students more effectively and structure meaningful conversations on our campuses. Group presentations gave us the opportunity to share ideas, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another’s experiences.

We left with practical strategies for organizing impactful events, strengthening our chapters, and mobilizing more students to join the movement. The experience was both intellectually stimulating and deeply motivating, showing us that our voices as students are powerful. Going forward, our task is to apply what we learned by creating spaces for critical dialogue and connecting economics to the lived realities of our communities and student lives.

The workshop reaffirmed that by working together through Rethinking Economics for Africa, we can help shape a more just, relevant, and African economy and economics curriculum, for the people and for the planet.

📖💛💙 Reading Group Group Reflections

Our first REFA Reading Group explored a deceptively simple question: What is economics, and why should we rethink it?

Participants were invited to move beyond textbook definitions and reflect on whether South Africa’s economic thinking should prioritise human well-being and lived realities over narrow goals like profit, efficiency, and growth. Drawing from personal experiences, community contexts, and critical discussion, students shared grounded perspectives on inequality, choice, and the kind of economy they believe is worth building.

This exercise matters. It shifts economics from abstract theory into something lived, contested, and shaped by real people. By centring diverse voices and experiences, the Reading Group builds the analytical depth and critical awareness needed to engage meaningfully with South Africa’s socio-economic challenges.
