𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗯𝘂 𝗣𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝗪𝗖

Yesterday, the Faculty of Law at the University of the Western Cape had the distinct privilege of hosting Prof. Shibu Puthalath, Associate Head of Department at the School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) in India. His visit marked an important step toward fostering stronger cross-institutional ties and expanding our global academic network.

We kicked off the day with a guided campus tour to share the rich history, culture, and vibrant community of UWC. Following the tour, we facilitated a productive meeting with our International Relations Office to align strategic priorities and explore future global engagement opportunities. We were also honored to connect with Ms. Ruby Jaspreet, Consul General of India in Cape Town, strengthening both diplomatic and academic goodwill. To wrap up the visit, Prof. Puthalath met with our Heads of Departments and the Directors of several faculty units for an insightful discussion focused on identifying synergies for joint research, academic exchanges, and collaborative initiatives between our institutions.

We are deeply inspired by the ideas shared during these sessions and look forward to building a meaningful, impactful partnership moving forward.

We are pleased to share a new contribution by GELC Director Prof van der Berg (Joubert), published on Verfassungsblog.

In “The Constitution Meets the Climate: What South Africa’s Wild Coast Judgment Adds to Climate Constitutionalism,” Prof van der Berg reflects on the Constitutional Court’s recent Wild Coast judgment and its significance for climate constitutionalism in South Africa and beyond.

The piece considers how the judgment brings climate responsibility, environmental protection, participation, culture and community knowledge into the constitutional exercise of public power, while also engaging with emerging international climate jurisprudence.

The contribution forms part of Verfassungsblog’s Law and Climate Spotlight, an excellent resource bringing together global perspectives on climate change and law.

We are excited to invite you to an upcoming hybrid seminar by Dr Maria Helena Saari, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Oulu, titled “Reimagining Earth-Centred Governance with Youth and Frontline Actors: Perspectives from International Practice”.

The seminar explores youth-led and ranger-guided multispecies diplomacy as a practice of ecojustice education. Drawing on the Multispecies Model United Nations pilot in France and the KAZA Youth Diplomacy Forum, Dr Saari will consider how Rights of Nature and frontline participation can help reimagine sustainability education, environmental governance and meaningful participation across local, regional and global policy processes.
