𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗶𝗲𝗱𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝗪𝗖 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼-𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲

On Monday 19 October 2026, Constitutional Court Justice Steven Majiedt visited The University of the Western Cape (UWC) Faculty of Law to deliver a guest lecture to students in the Constitutional Law 202 (CON202) class. The guest lecture was arranged by lecturer Dr Thabile Chonco-Spambo, whose initiative provided students with an opportunity to engage with contemporary constitutional law through the experience of a senior judicial figure.

The lecture explored socio-economic rights, with a particular focus on the Constitutional Court’s evolving jurisprudence on the right of access to adequate housing and the pursuit of spatial justice.

Drawing on his personal and professional experiences, Justice Majiedt reflected on his time as a UWC student, South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, and the enduring effects of the Group Areas Act and the spatial segregation it entrenched. He also emphasised the importance of using the Constitution as a tool to transform society and address inequalities inherited from the past.

As a UWC alumnus and Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Law, Justice Majiedt maintains a valued connection with the Faculty, enriching academic life through his engagement with students on contemporary public law issues. His contribution offers students an opportunity to connect constitutional principles with the lived realities and legal challenges shaping South African society.

His connection with UWC also reflects the enduring contribution of alumni. In 2023, members of his LLB class of 1983 reunited and contributed to the [UWC Law Alumni Fund](https://law.uwc.ac.za/faculty-of-law/uwc-law-alumni-fund-launched/) to support scholarships for law students.

The Faculty of Law appreciates Justice Majiedt’s continued engagement with the faculty and its students. The faculty also acknowledges Dr Thabile Chonco-Spambo’s role in facilitating this valuable learning opportunity.

The Journal of Anti-Corruption Law (JACL), in collaboration with the Department of Criminal Justice and Procedure in the Faculty of Law at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), invites academics, researchers, legal practitioners, policymakers and other interested stakeholders to the ninth Economic Crime & Corruption Conference.

Illicit financial flows continue to present significant challenges to Africa's economies, governance systems and legal frameworks. With an estimated US$90 billion leaving Africa annually through illicit financial outflows and an estimated US$148 billion annual cost of corruption, the need for stronger legal accountability and effective enforcement remains critical.

The conference will examine how African legal systems can better identify illicit conduct, establish responsibility, investigate and prosecute economic crimes, and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.

The The University of the Western Cape (UWC) Faculty of Law congratulates Prof Tinashe Kondo on his appointment as Deputy Dean: Learning & Teaching, effective July 2026.

Prof Kondo’s appointment marks a significant milestone in a journey that began at UWC, where he completed his undergraduate and postgraduate law studies before building his academic career within the Faculty. Since joining as a Graduate Assistant in 2015, he has progressed through several academic positions, from Associate Lecturer and Lecturer to Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor, culminating in his appointment to academic leadership.

His work spans legal scholarship, curriculum development, postgraduate education and the mentorship of emerging academics. His research interests include competition law, investment law, digital regulation, human rights and social justice in Africa. He is also the author of "𝘓𝘢𝘸 & 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘡𝘪𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘸𝘦", published in 2021, and co-developed the LLM in Mercantile Law with a specialisation in Competition Law and Policy.

Reflecting on his appointment, Prof Kondo described it as a moment of coming full circle.

“It feels surreal. I have come full circle: this institution is my alma mater, and my career and formative development began in this Faculty. To contribute in this way is an utmost privilege, and one I do not take lightly,” he said.

In his new role, Prof Kondo’s central priority is to strengthen student success and enhance the student experience. His vision includes developing relevant, student-centred curricula, creating opportunities for practical learning and preparing graduates to navigate an evolving world of work.

“Law is a skill, and indeed a life skill, that can be harnessed in almost every aspect of our day-to-day lives. I therefore want to provide a platform that produces agile, adaptable and creative law graduates,” he said.

Among his priorities are exploring work-integrated learning opportunities, reviewing academic programmes to ensure their continued relevance, and identifying opportunities to improve administrative processes. He also emphasises the importance of collaboration between academic and support staff in advancing the Faculty’s teaching and learning objectives.

The Faculty congratulates Prof Kondo on this important milestone and looks forward to his contribution to strengthening teaching and learning, supporting student development and advancing the Faculty’s academic project.

The University of the Western Cape UWC Faculty of Law proudly hosted, on 6 May 2026, the Dean’s Merit Awards 2026, recognising outstanding academic achievement across all programmes.

The ceremony honoured excellence at multiple levels, celebrating high-performing students in distinctions categories, including summa cm laude, magna cm laude and cm laude. These awards reflect sustained academic dedication and the Faculty’s commitment to cultivating a culture of excellence.

In addition to distinctions, the Faculty recognised top-performing students across programmes and year levels. Awards were presented to first-place students in the LLB four-year and five-year streams, BCom Law, BA Law, and diploma programmes, including the Higher Certificate in Forensic Examination and the Advanced Diploma in Labour Law.

Subject-specific excellence was also acknowledged through a wide range of sponsored prizes. These included awards for top performance in key disciplines such as Corporate Law, Law of Delict, Evidence, Labour Law, Insurance Law, Public International Law, Law of Succession, Insolvency, Contract, Administrative Law, Statutory Interpretation, Property Law, Conveyancing, Tax Law, Civil Procedure, Environmental Law, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and Legal Process.

𝗨𝗪𝗖 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗣𝗔 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲

The University of the Western Cape UWC Faculty of Law celebrated students who participated in the UWC/NPA Vacation Programme, recognising their commitment to developing practical knowledge and gaining exposure to the workings of the criminal justice system.

Held from 8–12 June 2026 at the Bellville Magistrates’ Court, the five-day programme was created by Dr Delecia Beyers, Lecturer in the Department of Criminal Justice and Procedure, and facilitated by Advocate Deon Ruiters of the National Prosecuting Authority.

Now in its second year, the programme has grown in student participation, demonstrating increasing interest in practical legal education and opportunities that connect academic learning with the realities of legal practice.

Students engaged with a range of topics, including bail court criminal procedure and bail applications, section 112 pleas and section 105A plea negotiations, child justice, Children’s Court applications, domestic violence proceedings and applications concerning parenting plans and the termination of parental responsibilities and rights.

The programme provided students with valuable exposure to the practical application of legal principles and the processes that underpin criminal justice and related areas of legal practice.

The certificate ceremony recognised the students’ participation and marked another milestone in the continued development of the programme.

The Faculty thanks Dr Delecia Beyers for creating this opportunity and Advocate Deon Ruiters and the NPA for contributing to the practical development of UWC Law students.

The Faculty looks forward to the continued growth of the programme and to creating opportunities for even more students to benefit from practical legal exposure in future.

On 21 September 2026, The University of the Western Cape UWC Faculty of Law hosted the inaugural lecture of Professor Sue-Mari Viljoen, titled “The Public Value of Property.”

The lecture explored the complex relationship between property rights, constitutional rights and the public interest within South Africa’s property system, particularly in relation to land and housing.

Professor Viljoen, Professor in the Department of Private Law and a specialist in property, land and housing reform, reflected on property as a state-created institution shaped by political and socio-economic imperatives. Her address considered how the public value of property influences regulatory measures, judicial decision-making, democratic deliberation and the fulfilment of constitutional rights.

The lecture also examined the role of the state in responding to South Africa’s land crisis and in shaping the understanding and regulation of land as a limited resource. Moving beyond the social function of property, Professor Viljoen considered how property can contribute to individual and communal resilience.

The inaugural lecture provided an important platform for engaging with contemporary questions surrounding property, land and housing, while highlighting Professor Viljoen’s contribution to legal scholarship in these fields.

𝗙𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗦 𝗨𝗪𝗖 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲

The Federation of African Law Students (FALAS) UWC hosted its Heritage Month Debate, bringing students together to engage in meaningful discussions around customary law, traditional practices, culture and contemporary society.

The debate provided participants with an opportunity to develop their confidence, legal reasoning, research and public-speaking skills while engaging with important questions within an African legal and cultural context. Participants debated in pairs, developing connected arguments, responding to opposing positions and engaging with questions from adjudicators and the audience.

The competition placed emphasis not only on the strength of individual arguments, but also on teamwork, clear reasoning, evidence, respectful engagement and the ability to build one coherent case.

Alusani Mabidi and Duduzile Sikhosana emerged as the winning team, with Rebone Masedikwe and Menelisi Morobe securing second place. Alusani Mabidi was also recognised as the Best Speaker.

Congratulations to all the participants for bringing their perspectives, engaging critically with the motions and demonstrating the importance of debate as a space for legal and intellectual development.

The UWC Faculty of Law proudly congratulates Prof Angela van der Berg (Joubert), Director of the Global Environmental Law Centre (GELC), on receiving a Y2 rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF) South Africa.

This recognition reflects Prof Van der Berg’s growing research profile and her valuable contributions to environmental and climate change law and governance.

We celebrate this achievement with Prof Van der Berg and the GELC community and wish her continued success in advancing impactful research in this important field.

We are delighted to congratulate GELC Director, Prof Angela van der Berg (Joubert), on receiving a Y2 rating from the National Research Foundation South Africa.

This recognition reflects her growing research profile and contributions to environmental and climate change law and governance, including climate justice, constitutional environmental law, climate resilience and adaptation, urban and local climate governance, and climate litigation.

Her work continues to strengthen African and Global South perspectives in environmental and climate law, with a particular focus on constitutionally grounded and justice-oriented approaches to contemporary climate governance challenges.
