Parliament visit report by Thulile Zikhali (27 March 2026)

On Friday, 27 March, I had the opportunity to attend the Parliament Debs Day Public ICT Workshop at the Parliament in Cape Town. It was an insightful and engaging experience that gave me a deeper understanding of how Parliament operates.

The day began with a guided tour of the Parliament buildings. The architecture and overall environment were truly impressive. Due to protocol, only the tour guide was permitted to take photographs in certain areas, so I was unable to take my own pictures. However, we were informed that the photos would be shared with us later, and I will forward them once I receive them.

Following the tour, we attended a workshop that focused on public participation in Parliament, particularly concerning religious and traditional groups. A key discussion point was the concern that these groups currently do not have a clearly defined structure or dedicated representation within Parliament, unlike other sectors such as women or specific departments. Representatives from various religious backgrounds, including Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, expressed the need for formal recognition and structured engagement within parliamentary processes.

The workshop emphasized that before submitting petitions or advocating for structural changes, it is essential for citizens to understand how Parliament works. We were educated on the structure of Parliament, how laws are made, and the processes involved in public participation. This included explanations of parliamentary seating arrangements, roles of members, and how decisions are debated and finalized.

There was also an interactive session where attendees were given the opportunity to ask questions. Some of the common questions included:

How can citizens submit a petition to Parliament?
What steps are involved in creating or changing a law?
How can different community groups gain representation or recognition?
What role does the public play in influencing decisions in Parliament?
How accessible is Parliament to ordinary citizens?

The facilitators provided detailed responses, helping to clarify these processes and encouraging active civic engagement.

Although I had to leave before the session concluded, the experience was overall very positive. The environment was welcoming, and the discussions were intellectually stimulating.

Overall, the workshop was both educational and inspiring. It highlighted the importance of understanding governance systems and actively participating in shaping them as informed citizens.
