Two Oceans Graduate Institute (TOGI) was established in 2017 by Mrs. Recognition of TOGI’s commitment to quality came swiftly.

TOGI offers a fully online and affordable PGCE Senior and FET Phase Teaching, BEd Intermediate Phase Teaching, BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching, and BEd Senior and FET Phase Teaching. Ashra Norton and Dr. Ali Adam, guided by a shared vision to create a transformative educational institution. Founded under the provisions of the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997, TOGI embodies the spirit of innovation and diversity that this legislation encourages, standing proudly as a private higher education provider within South Africa’s dynamic educational landscape. From the outset, TOGI has been dedicated to one critical mission: advancing teacher education. By launching its flagship programme, the Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Intermediate Phase Teaching in 2017, TOGI addressed significant challenges in literacy and numeracy education in primary schools. This commitment laid a solid foundation for enhancing educational standards across South Africa, driving excellence in both secondary and tertiary sectors. In February 2017, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) formally acknowledged TOGI as a private higher education provider. This milestone followed the successful accreditation of the BEd (Intermediate Phase Teaching) programme by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and its registration with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). TOGI’s journey of growth and innovation continued in 2020 with the accreditation of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching. The first cohort of PGCE students embarked on their studies in January 2021, successfully graduating in December of the same year. In 2022, TOGI further expanded its academic offerings by achieving accreditation for the Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Foundation Phase Teaching. This significant achievement was followed by the enrolment of the first cohort of Foundation Phase students in January 2023, underscoring TOGI’s ongoing commitment to shaping the future of South African education. Today, TOGI stands as a beacon of excellence in teacher education, inspiring a new generation of educators to lead with confidence, compassion, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Registration & Accreditation:

Two Oceans Graduate Institute is provisional registration with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) under the Higher Education Act, 1997, valid until December 31, 2026 (Registration No. 2017/HE08/001). As part of the standard process for all new private higher education institutions, TOGI is undergoing a candidacy phase of provisional registration. A quality audit by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) is scheduled for late 2025, paving the way for TOGI’s transition to full registration.

Sometimes, our most personal experiences lead us to a greater purpose.

When Saleh's son was diagnosed with autism, it gave her even more motivation to continue her journey towards becoming a teacher.

Balancing motherhood and studying, she completed assignments at night while making time for her children.

Today, she is a TOGI graduate working in a special needs classroom, making a difference in the lives of learners.

Her story reminds us that the experiences that shape our own lives can inspire us to make a difference in someone else's.

One learner struggling to read became the moment that changed Clyde’s direction.

He started helping the learner through reading and as he saw the difference that support could make, something clicked. That experience showed him the impact a teacher can have and helped him realise that education was the path he wanted to follow.

For Clyde, teaching is about more than passing on knowledge. It is about helping someone understand, grow and giving them something they can carry forward.

Sometimes it only takes one learner, one moment and one opportunity to realise where you are meant to be.

What would teacher education look like if peace, justice and dignity sat at its centre?

That's the question behind TOGI's 3rd Annual Academic Colloquium, a full day of conversation on Wednesday, 25 November 2026. Abstracts are open now.

This year's theme is Reimagining Teacher Education for Peace, Justice and Transformation in a Changing Educational Landscape.

If your work touches any of these areas, there's a place for it:

1. Curriculum and social justice: decoloniality, Ubuntu, multilingualism, teacher identity and assessment reforma
2. Peace, liberation and resistance: care and dignity in classrooms, critical pedagogy, student voice and teacher agency
3. Digital and blended learning: online teaching, AI, digital equity and keeping students on track to finish
4.Leadership and governance: ethical, participatory and teacher leadership, and quality assurance
5. Community-engaged education: school–community partnerships, service-learning and research done with communities, not just about them

We're inviting academics, teacher educators, school leaders, practitioners, policymakers and postgraduate students. Your study doesn't need to be finished. Pilot studies and early findings are welcome alongside completed research.

You can present a research paper, a work in progress, a practice-based or innovation session, or a poster. Your abstract should be 250–300 words and speak to the theme and at least one subtheme. Co-authored work is encouraged.

Some learners need a little more from the person standing in front of the classroom.

For one of our graduates, that was exactly where his passion for teaching began.

He found himself drawn to the learners who were often more difficult to reach. Over time, those same learners began turning to him for advice, guidance and support.

Teaching was not something he was immediately certain about. But through teaching practice, experience and the relationships he built with his learners, he realised this was where he wanted to be.

His hope is simple: that years from now, his learners will remember that he helped them grow.
