Two Oceans Graduate Institute (TOGI) was established in 2017 by Mrs. Recognition of TOGI’s commitment to quality came swiftly.

1 of 1997, TOGI embodies the spirit of innovation and diversity that this legislation encourages, standing proudly as a private higher education provider within South Africa’s dynamic educational landscape. From the outset, TOGI has been dedicated to one critical mission: advancing teacher education. By launching its flagship programme, the Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Intermediate Phase Teaching in 2017, TOGI addressed significant challenges in literacy and numeracy education in primary schools. This commitment laid a solid foundation for enhancing educational standards across South Africa, driving excellence in both secondary and tertiary sectors. In February 2017, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) formally acknowledged TOGI as a private higher education provider. This milestone followed the successful accreditation of the BEd (Intermediate Phase Teaching) programme by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and its registration with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). TOGI’s journey of growth and innovation continued in 2020 with the accreditation of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching. The first cohort of PGCE students embarked on their studies in January 2021, successfully graduating in December of the same year. In 2022, TOGI further expanded its academic offerings by achieving accreditation for the Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Foundation Phase Teaching. This significant achievement was followed by the enrolment of the first cohort of Foundation Phase students in January 2023, underscoring TOGI’s ongoing commitment to shaping the future of South African education. Today, TOGI stands as a beacon of excellence in teacher education, inspiring a new generation of educators to lead with confidence, compassion, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Registration & Accreditation:

Two Oceans Graduate Institute is provisional registration with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) under the Higher Education Act, 1997, valid until December 31, 2026 (Registration No. 2017/HE08/001). As part of the standard process for all new private higher education institutions, TOGI is undergoing a candidacy phase of provisional registration. A quality audit by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) is scheduled for late 2025, paving the way for TOGI’s transition to full registration.

What an exciting day of growth, learning and representation!

TOGI HODs Dr Chantelle Mowers and Masnoenah Kamalie, together with two FSLs Dr Samantha Hoffman and Shantè van Wyk, proudly represented TOGI at the Global Institute for Teacher Education and Society (GITES) Symposium, in collaboration with CPUT and Creating Futures by Growing Greats.

It was a day well spent in the company of prolific academics, emerging researchers, passionate academics and educators from across the Education Sector. The symposium was rich with high-level dialogue, networking, and opportunities to engage with existing research, new ideas, and powerful pilot projects that may add to shaping the future of education.

Topics explored included:
Rethinking Educational Leadership; Collaborative Strategies to Support Novice Teachers in SA; AI-Mediated Reflective Practice; Empowering Educators for a Digital Future; and Rethinking Classroom Management in the AI Era.

Two Oceans Graduate Institute (TOGI) is proud to continue strengthening its relationship with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) through meaningful engagement that supports the professional development of future educators.

Recently, TOGI had the privilege of hosting a SACE Student Teacher Consultative Workshop on the Draft Code of Professional Ethics for Student Teachers. Our BEd Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase student teachers actively participated in this national consultation, contributing valuable insights towards shaping the ethical standards of the teaching profession in South Africa.

This engagement reflects the important role that TOGI student teachers and graduates play within the broader education sector. It also demonstrates our ongoing commitment to preparing educators who are professionally competent, ethically grounded, and ready to contribute positively to schools and communities.

We are particularly encouraged by the growing collaboration between TOGI and SACE as we work together to advance quality teacher education and support the professional journey of both current students and alumni.

To our students, graduates, partners and stakeholders: thank you for your continued confidence in TOGI. We remain committed to excellence in teacher education and to developing educators who lead with integrity, professionalism and purpose.

She thought her future was in the corporate world.

Instead, her journey led her back to the classroom and the community that helped shape her.

After leaving her job in 2019, she took time to discover who she was and what she wanted to do. That search eventually brought her to teaching and back to The Leadership College, where she had once completed her own matric.

Today, she teaches Life Orientation and Creative Arts and helps young people see that where they come from does not have to determine where they are going.

Her journey with TOGI has given her practical tools that she can use in the classroom, but it has also given her something just as important: support.

When she experienced the loss of her nephew while completing her studies, her lecturers looked beyond the assignment deadlines. They asked how she was doing and what support she needed.

That experience reminded her that education is not only about academics. It is about relationships, care and understanding.

She became a teacher to support the youth.

And today, she walks into her classroom with a deeper understanding of the learners who may need more than a lesson. They may need someone to see them.

Tomorrow, we share the story of a woman whose journey led her back to the community that helped shape her.

From security officer to teacher.

Her journey was not the one she first imagined, but it became the one she was meant to walk.

She started at TLC without knowing that one opportunity would open the door to something much bigger. Through encouragement, hard work and the chance to study while working and raising a family, her path slowly changed.

Teaching was not the original plan.

But somewhere along the way, it became the calling.

Today, she stands as proof that growth does not have an age limit. That your current role does not define your final story. And that when the right people believe in you, a new future can begin.

Her journey with TOGI gave her the flexibility to keep going, even when life was full, deadlines were heavy and family sacrifices had to be made.

Now, she gets to step into the classroom with purpose: to care, to guide and to make a difference in the lives of learners in her community.

This is her TOGI story.

Some journeys ask more from us than we expected.

In this speech from our TOGI Graduation, Axolile Hoza reflects on returning to education, studying online, facing load shedding, late nights, isolation and the pressure of balancing life, work and tuition.

But he also reminds us of the people who help carry the journey: friends, lecturers, mentors, admin staff and family.

A reminder that success is not always about having it easy. Sometimes, it is simply the courage to keep going.

Some journeys are not only completed in classrooms.

For Firdaus Saleh Mohamed, her TOGI journey was shaped through faith, motherhood, sacrifice and perseverance.

When she first enrolled at TOGI, she thought she was simply working towards a qualification. Looking back, it became one of the most challenging, yet rewarding journeys of her life.

Over the past few years, Firdaus balanced many roles: student, wife, daughter in law, mother, employee, caregiver and advocate for her children. She studied through two pregnancies while raising a young child and faced the emotional journey of receiving autism diagnoses for her children.

There were days when her car became her classroom. During load shedding, she attended online classes wherever she could find enough signal and battery power. Assignments were completed in therapy waiting rooms, projects were worked on from hospital rooms and studies continued even during one of the hardest moments of all, when her baby was admitted to ICU.

Through tears, sleepless nights and moments where quitting felt easier, she kept going.

She was also not alone. Her sister in law and brother in law supported her endlessly, staying up late, encouraging her and reminding her not to give up when she felt exhausted.

Today, Firdaus has reached the finish line. The assignments are done, the practicals are completed and the long nights are behind her.

This degree was not earned only in a classroom.

It was earned in hospital corridors, therapy waiting rooms, parked cars during load shedding, family gatherings, sleepless nights and through unwavering faith.

No matter what happens next, that is an achievement no one can ever take away from her.
