Winter is here... Make sure you do these things:

1) Ensure weak colonies are combined with strong ones

2) Feed weaker colonies sugar water with 2:1 ratio

3) Remove extra supers so bees have less space to keep warm

4) Check for pests: -- ants, wax moth, varroa mite

5) In colder areas, consider insulation

6) Move colonies out of cold pools inside valleys, low lying areas

7) Seek winter forage if you can move your bees

8) Do not do frequent inspections especially on or just before frost/snow events

We teach to never squash queen cells. Most beekeepers are beginners and will likely remain hobbyist beekeepers for life.

Commercial beekeepers have their methods and needs when it comes to swarming and splitting queen cells that work for them.

should treat swarming QUEEN CELLS as a major resource = opportunity to make more colonies, to sell the sealed queen cells to another beekeeper or to replace an older queen in another colony or donate it to another beginner who lost their queen for whatever reason!

Are we planting crops for Chemicals or for pollinators?

Seems like a bit of a downward spiral here... More and more chemical-resistant crops seems less like food pollinators, animals and people should be eating...



Research shows glyphosate degrades and slows the queen bee's laying production over time. It also causes worker foragers to lose their GPS making them confused and disorientated.

If that's what happens with the bees, what is it doing to us over time? 🥲
