🍽️ FOOD AND NUTRITION DEPARTMENT ENGAGES WITH INDUSTRY INNOVATION

Last week, Zakithi Mhlongo, Laboratory Assistant (Functions Chef) at Rendezvous Restaurant in the Food and Nutrition Department at Durban University of Technology, attended the Africa Food Show in Cape Town.

The event brought together food industry professionals, culinary experts, suppliers, and innovators from across the continent to showcase emerging trends, innovative products, advanced technologies, and evolving practices within the food and hospitality sector.

Attending industry events such as the Africa Food Show provides valuable opportunities to gain insights into current developments, exchange knowledge with industry leaders, and explore best practices that continue to shape the future of food and nutrition.

The experience contributes to ongoing professional development and supports the department’s commitment to ensuring that teaching, learning, and practical training remain relevant, responsive, and aligned with industry needs.

Through continuous engagement with industry, the Food and Nutrition Department remains dedicated to preparing graduates who are equipped for a dynamic and ever-evolving sector.

FAS CLOSES THE TERM ON A HIGH NOTE WITH COMRADES MARATHON INSPIRATION 🏅

From the first week of the term to the final stretch, it has been a journey of focus, effort, and quiet determination across our faculty.

As we wrapped up academic activities and closed off the term, two members of our community were out on a very different kind of test, the Comrades Marathon. Colleen and Mthobisi took on the ultimate up-run and carried the same discipline we see in our halls every day into one of the toughest races in the world.

Colleen Emanuel completed her 5th Comrades in 09:41:31, showing remarkable consistency and commitment.
Dr. Mthobisi Ntuli finished his 2nd in 11:09:28, pushing through with real grit from start to finish.

Different spaces, same story. Showing up, staying the course, and finishing strong.

As the term closes, we carry that spirit with us. 🏅

🏃‍♂️ Day 2 at the Comrades Expo was buzzing!

Thousands of runners came through for final prep, fitness checks, and race-day tips. The energy was high, the talks were inspiring, and the countdown to The Ultimate Human Race is officially on. 💜

🏃‍♂️🔬 FAS Checked His Fitness. Now He’s Ready for Comrades.

Currently at the Comrades Expo is our very own Dr Mthobisi Ntuli from the Mathematics Department, gearing up for his second Comrades Marathon.

Fresh from completing the Two Oceans Marathon in 6:24 and after undergoing a fitness assessment at the Faculty of Applied Sciences stand, Dr Ntuli is feeling ready for race day.

Reflecting on his preparation, he shared that one of the biggest lessons in Comrades is pacing. “The challenge is maintaining an easy pace, especially when you’re used to running fast. You need to pace yourself properly to avoid burning out too early.”

He also noted that while many runners fear the climbs, he finds the downhills more demanding. “Going down can be tougher on the body. Last year I struggled with a knee injury because of the impact of the descent.”

After finishing his Comrades debut in 11:58 last year, Dr Ntuli is aiming for a stronger performance and hopes to cross the finish line in 10:55.
