Today's STEM learners are tomorrow's innovators, researchers and changemakers. Investing in young minds means investing in solutions that can transform communities and improve lives.

Through an internship at the NWU Science Centre, this young science communicator is helping learners discover how technology and innovation can solve real-world challenges. From raising awareness about emerging technologies to making scientific research more accessible, their work is inspiring the next generation to see the possibilities within STEM.

Promises shape futures. When they are broken, trust fades and opportunities slip further out of reach.

In a powerful Youth Day message, NWU Chancellor Dr Anna Mokgokong challenges all sectors of society to move beyond empty promises and take responsibility for creating meaningful opportunities for young people. From government and business to schools, universities and communities, building a better future requires action, accountability and integrity.

This Youth Month, we honour the legacy of the young people of 1976 by celebrating a new generation of changemakers shaping South Africa's future.

At the North-West University, our students are more than future professionals – they are leaders, athletes, innovators, mentors and community builders who are already making an impact today. From the classroom to the sports field and beyond, they are demonstrating that the future is not something to wait for; it is something to shape.

As Tshepo Tlaka reminds us, access to education is a privilege earned through the sacrifices of those who came before us. And as students like Quinn Claasen, Corli Windell, Ricardo Fourie and Rouwan Mitchell show, empowerment begins when young people believe in their potential and commit to making a difference.

The North-West University (NWU) is aware of a deeply concerning video that is currently circulating on multiple online platforms. Internal processes are under way to address the issues as a matter of urgency. In the meantime, the necessary arrangements have been made to protect all affected staff.

Young people are proving that meaningful change often starts with a single act of kindness.

For Maronel Fourie, leadership meant taking action when fellow students needed support most. 💜

As a final-year psychology student and former Miss NWU Vanderbijlpark Campus First Princess, she turned compassion into action through her Food for Thought initiative, helping provide meals to students during exam season and contributing fresh produce to the campus Meal A Day programme.

Her story is a reminder that leadership is not about titles, it’s about seeing a need and choosing to make a difference.
