From the netball court to the classroom, and now to the national stage.

Elsunet du Plessis has built a career that reflects the many dimensions of sport. A former player, sport scientist, lecturer, sport manager and coach, she has now added South African U19 caretaker assistant coach to her growing list of achievements.

Elsunet has been appointed to the national U19 coaching setup for the upcoming Region 5 Games in Mozambique, taking place from 4–13 December 2026.

Her journey has taken her from representing the NWU Eagles, North West provincial teams and the Protea setup to coaching at provincial and university level. Since 2018, she has led the NWU Eagles as head coach, alongside her academic career in sport science. Her approach is grounded in continuous development, learning from others and, above all, putting players first.

Congratulations, Elsunet! We are proud to see you take your coaching journey to the national stage.

Research partnerships that make a difference!

The National Research Foundation (NRF) recently visited North-West University’s Potchefstroom and Mahikeng campuses as part of its national Institutional Visit and Feedback Loop initiative.

The engagement brought together researchers, postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and emerging researchers to discuss funding opportunities, research support and the postgraduate experience. It’s an important opportunity to strengthen collaboration, support the next generation of researchers and show NWU’s commitment to research excellence.

It was a battle from the first whistle to the final buzzer, with just two points separating the sides at the end. The Eagles showed composure, determination and fight when it mattered most.

What becomes possible when we give? 💜

Support. Opportunity. A better future. And communities empowered through students who choose to make a difference.

Because an NWU that cares is an NWU that supports, inspires, empowers and gives back. And sometimes, giving creates something just as powerful in return: true inner joy.

This is what it means to care. This is the spirit. 💜

What if learning didn’t feel like learning?

For Prof. Verona Leendertz, engagement is at the heart of meaningful learning. As Deputy Dean: Research and Innovation in NWU’s Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, she explores how technology and innovative teaching can create immersive learning experiences.

Her journey began in the classroom, where she taught mathematics for 17 years. Today, her work spans learning technologies, innovative pedagogy and the development of the next generation of researchers.

For Prof. Leendertz, innovation means remaining open to change, embracing new ideas and continuously reflecting on how we can improve the learning experience. Having supervised numerous master’s and doctoral students at NWU and the University of Eastern Finland, she continues to advance innovative teaching while nurturing the researchers of tomorrow.

As Women’s Month comes to a close, we celebrate Prof. Leendertz and the women at NWU who are challenging conventional approaches, inspiring curiosity and shaping the future of learning.
