TUT HOSTS FUNDISA BUSINESS MEETING TO ADVANCE NURSING EDUCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Adelaide Tambo School of Nursing Science at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is hosting the Forum of University Nursing Deans of South Africa (FUNDISA) Business Meeting on 29 and 30 October 2026.

The meeting, opened by Head of Department, Dr Nomusa Masubelele,
Adelaide Tambo School of Nursing Science, brings together representatives of university nursing departments to engage on matters affecting nursing and midwifery education, research and scholarship in South Africa. It provides an important platform for collaboration, strategic discussions and the advancement of nursing within the higher education sector.

FUNDISA is a registered not-for-profit organisation and serves as the national voice for South Africa’s nursing and midwifery programmes in higher education. Through strategic partnerships with donors, regulators, professional bodies, associations and other organisations, the forum creates opportunities to advance nursing scholarship and address the needs of the sector.

Representing 21 member university nursing departments and two associate members, FUNDISA plays an important role in bringing together academic leaders to discuss shared priorities and strengthen the contribution of universities to nursing education and development.

The two-day meeting at TUT includes discussions on governance, portfolio committee activities, research projects, education, professional practice and student engagement, as well as planning for future initiatives.

By hosting this meeting, the Adelaide Tambo School of Nursing Science contributes to a national dialogue focused on collaboration, academic development and the continued advancement of nursing and midwifery education in South Africa.

🎓🇿🇦 AFTER 30 YEARS OF OPENING DOORS FOR OTHERS, MARIETTE DEIST MAKES SOUTH AFRICAN MEDICAL HISTORY!

In 2015, Mariette Deist travelled to Scotland to pursue a specialist master’s degree because she could not find a South African programme that met her professional needs.

Eleven years later, she has made history at home! 🇿🇦

On 15 October 2026, Mariette became the first person in South Africa to receive a PhD (Science): Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics, awarded by Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

🦿 Orthotics and prosthetics is the healthcare field that provides artificial limbs and supportive devices, helping people regain mobility, independence and confidence.

For more than three decades, Mariette has worked as a clinician, educator and professional leader. She helped establish TUT’s bachelor’s programme and led efforts to secure international accreditation for its training.

💙 Her doctoral research tackles an important question: How do we ensure newly qualified practitioners have the skills and competence to care for patients safely when they enter independent practice?

Her work has produced a framework for assessing those essential skills.

This is far more than a personal academic achievement. It strengthens South Africa’s ability to train its own specialists, advance research and improve patient care.
