Der CAS in S*x- and Gender-Specific Medicine vermittelt genau dieses Wissen, interdisziplinär, berufsbegleitend und praxisnah. Er wird von den Universitäten Zürich und Bern getragen, mit starker Beteiligung von Unisanté.

Seit dem Start 2020 hat sich in der Schweiz viel bewegt:
🔶Die erste Professur für Gendermedizin wurde 2024 an der Universität Zürich besetzt.
🔶Das Nationale Forschungsprogramm NFP 83 Gendermedizin und -gesundheit wurde lanciert.
🔶Mit der Swiss Society for Gender Health ist ein nationales Netzwerk für die Weiterentwicklung des Fachs entstanden.
🔶Das Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium findet diesen Oktober schon zum zweiten Mal statt.

🧠 Module «Neurology and Psychiatry”, 12/13 November in Zurich🧠

❓Why does a stroke look different in women than in men❓
❓Why are women twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's❓
❓Why do sleep disorders shift with puberty, pregnancy, and menopause❓

‼️These aren't footnotes in medicine. They're central questions our module on Neurology and Psychiatry puts front and center. Because good medicine isn't one-size-fits-all, it starts with understanding difference ‼️

This module brings together neurology, sleep research, psychiatry, and developmental pediatrics to explore how biological s*x and social gender shape brain health across the lifespan:
🔹 Neurological diseases: S*x differences in risk, manifestation, and treatment of stroke, neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative diseases, and epilepsy.
🔹 Sleep: How s*x and gender differences emerge at puberty and shift with the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause.
🔹 Dementia & Alzheimer's: Epidemiology, biomarkers, symptoms, and risk factors that differ by s*x and gender.
🔹 Mental health: Prevalence, causes, and s*x- and gender-sensitive approaches to diagnosing and treating depression and psychosis, including psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and hormone therapy.
🔹 Gender identity development: Age-appropriate milestones, differences across developmental domains, and how developmental disorders affect school life and educational outcomes for boys and girls.

✅ By the end of the module, participants will be able to recognize s*x and gender differences in the healthy brain and in gender identity development, understand how sleep is affected differently across s*xes, and apply this knowledge to more precise, personalized diagnosis and treatment in neurology and psychiatry.

Save the dates: 23-24 June 2026, University Hospital Zurich, Frauenklinikstrasse 10. The 3rd SABV Symposium brings two days of the best current science on s*x as a biological variable to Zurich, and it is open to everyone working in or around biomedical research, clinical practice, drug development, and health policy.
Organized by Ivana Jaric (Institute of Laboratory Animal Science, UZH) together with the EU-SABV COST Action (CA24168), the program features 23 lectures by speakers from 14 countries. Topics span s*x differences in brain function and disease, pain, pharmacology of anticancer drugs, kidney and lung disease, mental health across the female lifespan, perimenopause, and endometriosis. Plenaries include Jeffrey Mogil (McGill) on pain, s*x and death, Tallie Z. Baram (UC Irvine) on stress, estrogen and the hippocampus, Michelle Roche (Galway) presenting the PAINDIFF recommendations for preclinical pain research, Natasha Karp (AstraZeneca) on barriers to s*x-inclusive preclinical research, and Brett McKinnon (Queensland) on endometriosis. Day two opens with the McKinsey Health Institute on the economic consequences of underinvestment in women's health.
Why this matters across disciplines:
Clinicians get the mechanistic and pharmacological basis for why standard protocols fail differently in women and men. Researchers get methodological tools to design studies that actually power for s*x. Industry gets the regulatory and translational picture from people working inside it. CAS in S*x- and Gender-Specific Medicine participants and alumni get a concentrated update on the evidence underlying the curriculum, from the groups generating it. The symposium is accredited as continuing education by the Federation of Swiss Cantonal Veterinary Officers (VSKT) for anyone running animal studies under Swiss TSchV.
