EPFL EPFL is one of the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology. EPFL is Europe’s most cosmopolitan technical university.
(1257)

It has three missions: education, research and technology transfer at the highest international level. It receives students, professors and staff from over 120 nationalities. With both a Swiss and international calling, it is therefore guided by a constant wish to open up; its missions of teaching, research and partnership impact various circles: universities and engineering schools, developing and emerging countries, secondary schools and gymnasiums, industry and economy, political circles and the general public.

What if the future of machine learning lies not in bigger models, but in simpler, more transparent approaches?

On 11 November, Prof. Margo Seltzer, Co-Head of the Department of Computer Science at The University of British Columbia, will receive the 2026 Erna Hamburger Prize from the EPFL WISH FOUNDATION.

In her lecture, "The Case for Collaboration and a New Paradigm for Machine Learning", she will challenge the idea that increasingly complex AI systems are always the answer. She will explore how simpler approaches can offer comparable performance while improving interpretability, resource efficiency, fairness and privacy.

She will also share why collaboration is essential to research, from broadening our impact to helping people recognise and develop their strengths.

"I feel a little stuck when it comes to using AI. On the one hand, it’s very useful, and most of the time, it helps a lot. On the other hand, I don’t want to use AI because of its energy consumption and environmental impact. Here’s the dilemma: should I stick to my values, but risk taking much longer to understand the math?"

This quote, gathered through a survey conducted by an AI working group made up of the School’s student delegates, clearly illustrates the mixed feelings students have toward AI. ChatGPT hit like a meteorite in late 2022 and found fertile ground at EPFL, invading the computers and smartphones of tomorrow’s engineers.

Testimonials praise “his extraordinary dedication to teaching physics to over 4,000 students per year”; the fact that “he’s undoubtedly one of the most enthusiastic and driven employees at EPFL”; his “remarkable creativity and eagerness to help out others”...

We're talking about Pierre Wets, who has been designing physics experiments at our School for the past 23 years. His work, creativity, and enthusiasm have earned him the 2026 Outstanding Commitment Award.

Together with his colleagues, he prepares the experiments that professors need for their classes. In his large lab-workshop, the most unusual items sit side by side on tables on wheels.

Deep brain stimulation, already used to treat movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, could also open up new possibilities for treating severe psychiatric conditions. The technique uses targeted electrical impulses to modulate brain activity.

The team led by Mahsa Shoaran, head of the Integrated Neurotechnologies Laboratory at EPFL School of Engineering, has developed a low-power, implantable neural chip. It monitors communication between different brain regions in real time, detects specific cognitive and emotional states, and triggers stimulation when these states are identified.

Several EPFL labs are converging around an idea that began as a doctoral researcher’s hunch: functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the spinal cord could reveal crucial information to improve existing treatments for paralysis and pave the way for new ones.

Their research shows that the spinal cord does more than simply relay signals between the brain and the body. It also plays an active role in processing information. Although spinal fMRI is still in its early stages, it could provide a more detailed map of this activity.

How do we make climate-friendly habits stick? A team from our School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC), led by Claudia R. Binder, explored this question with solar technologies in Pully.

They found that costs, inancial incentives and technology availability play a dominant role in the adoption of such technologies. But after the tipping point, cultural and societal interactions appear to become increasingly important. The more neighbors are installing photovoltaics, the more likely people are to follow.

In short, helping climate-friendly behaviors persist over time is about finding the right balance between supportive policies, long-term infrastructures and social acceptance.
