PolyU recently hosted the launch ceremony and a dynamic series of campus activities, bringing Hakka history to life for our university community and the public through an inspiring tale of migration and heritage.

【抗癌新突破｜理大研發影像指數助乳癌患者精準用藥🎯】

對抗癌症最怕用錯藥、白受不必要的副作用。理大醫療科技及資訊學系研究團隊最近帶來重大突破，成功研發創新影像生物標記「腫瘤異質性指數」。🔬✨

這項技術由理大醫療科技及資訊學系系主任、醫學物理與智能腫瘤學講座教授蔡璟教授，聯同助理教授（研究）滕信智博士帶領團隊研發。團隊巧妙運用現有的磁力共振數據，在治療前以無創方式評估患者對標靶藥 AKT 抑制劑的反應。

📊 預測精準：指數較高患者接受該標靶藥物後的估計病理完全緩解率達 56.1%，即使在治療難度較高的三陰性乳癌患者中亦展現理想效果
🛡️ 無創全面：透過無創造影全面評估整個腫瘤特徵，免除重複活檢的痛苦與取樣誤差
🩺 個人化方案：在用藥前鎖定最適合的治療，避免無效療程及不必要的副作用

Breakthrough in Precision Cancer Treatment — PolyU develops innovative imaging biomarker to guide targeted therapy for breast cancer🎯

In cancer treatment, finding the right medication early while reducing unnecessary side effects is crucial. A research team at PolyU has developed an innovative imaging biomarker, the Tumour Heterogeneity Index (THI), marking a significant advance in precision cancer treatment. 🔬✨

Led by Prof. Cai Jing, Head of HTI and Chair Professor of Medical Physics and Intelligent Oncology at PolyU, alongside Research Assistant Professor Dr Teng Xinzhi, the research team applied advanced radiomics techniques to DCE-MRI data. This allows clinicians to non-invasively assess breast cancer patients’ response to AKT inhibitors before treatment begins.

📊 Predictive value — Patients with a high THI achieved an estimated pathological complete response (pCR) rate of up to 56.1%, with promising results also observed among patients with triple-negative breast cancer.

🛡️ Non-invasive and comprehensive — Evaluates the entire tumour to reduce the risk of sampling errors arising from differences in biopsy location, while minimising the discomfort associated with repeated biopsies.

🩺 Personalised treatment strategies — Enables clinicians to identify patients most likely to benefit before therapy begins, sparing others from treatments with limited effectiveness.

The findings have been published in the international academic journal Breast Cancer Research. 📖

【邁向第四代大學！理大與國際高校領袖共議大學社會責任及未來人才培育】

人工智能發展一日千里，產業轉型亦為全球帶來不少新挑戰，大學教育必須與時並進。理大早前參與了「全球大學校長及領袖高峰會 2026」，與世界各地的高校領袖聚首一堂，探討大學如何回應社會的快速發展。 💡

在高峰會上，理大校長滕錦光教授主持題為「高等教育的企業社會責任：因應產業需求的課程設計與人才培育」的專題討論 ，與四位大學代表深入交流。滕校長分享高等教育正逐步邁向『需求驅動、問題導向、學科交叉、產教融合』的第四代大學的發展模式，理大正積極實踐這個理念，透過建立跨學科研究平台、與業界共建研究機構，以及在內地多個城市設立技術創新研究院，致力將科研成果轉化落地，以科技解決社會的實際問題。

【PolyU joins Global University Presidents and Leaders Summit 2026 to explore universities’ social responsibility and talent development】

With the rapid advances in AI and accelerating industry transformation bringing new global challenges, university education must keep pace with the times. PolyU recently participated in the Global University Presidents and Leaders Summit 2026, joining university leaders from around the world to explore how universities can respond to evolving societal needs. 💡

At the Summit, Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, moderated a panel discussion entitled “Corporate Social Responsibility in Higher Education: Curriculum Design and Talent Development for Industry Needs”, engaging in in-depth exchanges with four university representatives. Prof. Teng shared that higher education is transitioning to the fourth-generation university model, characterised by being demand-driven, problem-oriented, interdisciplinary with integration of academia and industry. PolyU is actively putting this into practice by establishing interdisciplinary research platforms, co-establishing research institutes with industry, and setting up translational research institutes in multiple cities across the Chinese Mainland. We are committed to translating research outcomes into real-world applications to solve practical societal problems with technology.

【促進川港教育協同發展 🤝】

四川省教育廳代表團早前在中共四川省委教育工委副書記、教育廳黨組成員張瀾濤先生率領下到訪理大，獲理大校長滕錦光教授及副校長（教學）曹建農教授等校方代表接待。雙方隨後正式簽署全面深化戰略合作協議，標誌著川港兩地在教育及科研領域的協作邁向新里程。

建基於深厚交流，雙方未來將聚焦土木工程與防災減災、人工智能、酒店及旅遊管理、醫療科技及社會科學等優勢領域，深化科研協作及成果轉化。同時積極推動學生交換及研究生聯合培養項目，促進兩地青年人才交流。代表團此行亦參觀了理大大學展覽館及深空探測研究中心，實地了解理大參與國家深空探測任務與前沿科技研究的卓越成果。

Advancing Sichuan–Hong Kong Educational Collaboration 🤝

A delegation from the Department of Education of Sichuan Province, led by Mr Zhang Lantao, CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee Education Working Committee Deputy Secretary and Member of the Party Leadership Group of the Department of Education of Sichuan Province, recently visited PolyU and was received by University representatives including PolyU President Prof. Jin-Guang Teng and Vice President (Education) Prof. Cao Jiannong. The parties signed a strategic cooperation agreement, marking a significant milestone in educational and research collaboration between Sichuan and Hong Kong.

Building on established ties, both sides will focus on key areas such as civil engineering and disaster mitigation, artificial intelligence, hotel and tourism management, and healthcare and social sciences to advance research and facilitate knowledge transfer. They will also actively promote student exchanges and joint postgraduate programmes to foster talent development. During their visit, the delegation toured the PolyU University Gallery and the Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations to learn about the University's contributions to national deep space exploration missions and cutting-edge technological research.

With this agreement in place, PolyU will continue to leverage its strengths in research innovation and knowledge transfer, working closely with Sichuan to coordinate educational and research resources, realise complementary advantages, and implement further joint initiatives.

跑步襪的緩衝性能往往被忽視。

理大時裝及紡織學院副院長兼教授易潔倫及其研究團隊，分析了市面上有售的跑步襪的緩衝性能，包括普通跑步襪、傳統款跑步專用襪及五趾款跑步專用襪。

研究顯示，跑步專用襪在實驗室環境及跑步情況下，均能提供可量化的緩衝效益。研究團隊發現，相較於普通跑步襪，這些襪能在高負荷的前足區域提供更佳的衝擊衰減效果，並降低足底壓力，凸顯優化物料及設計對提升足部保護的價值。

The cushioning performance of running socks is often overlooked.

Prof. Kit Lun YICK, Associate Dean and Professor of the School of Fashion and Textiles at PolyU, and her research team analysed the cushioning performance of commercially available running socks, including regular, specialised traditional and specialised five-toed running socks.

The study showed that specialised running socks can provide measurable cushioning benefits under both laboratory and running conditions. The research team found that these socks provide greater impact attenuation and reduced plantar pressure in high-load forefoot areas compared with regular socks, highlighting the value of optimised materials and design for better foot protection.
