On 27 August, over 70 academic and administrative staff from PolyU Design gathered in Shenzhen for our annual School Retreat.

The day began with the Dean's keynote presentation, marking his 20th Dean's Talk, alongside sharing sessions by our Associate Deans. Reflecting on the School's development since 2019, the Dean highlighted progress in research, external grants, consultancy projects, doctoral education, student admissions, internationalisation, strategic partnerships and the growth of our global academic community. Colleagues concluded the session with a heartfelt round of applause in recognition of the School's achievements and Dean's leadership.

In the afternoon, colleagues visited the newly opened Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza. Through its exhibitions, we gained fresh perspectives on the intersections of design, art, culture and technology.

The retreat provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on our achievements, strengthen connections across the School, align colleagues around key priorities, exchange ideas and look ahead to the next chapter of PolyU Design's development.

How does design shape a world that works for everyone?

In a recent Mill MILK Weekly_pedia episode exploring the challenges faced by left-handed people in everyday life, Mr Chan Kam Fai, Lecturer at PolyU Design, shared insights on inclusive and human-centred design from a social designโ€™s perspective. The feature highlights how thoughtful design can better respond to the needs of different users and create more equitable experiences for all.

The discussion highlights an important lesson we teach at PolyU Design: good design starts with understanding people. Our students are trained to identify unmet needs, challenge assumptions, and create inclusive solutions that improve everyday life.
