PolyU Design has been an important hub of design education and research for Hong Kong. The School was ranked 15th on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings® by Subject - Art and Design in 2020 and is consistently among the top 20 in the world. The School offers a wide range of disciplines, including: product design, interaction design, information design, advertising design, media design, interior design, environmental design, social design, service design, transitional environments design, innovative business design, intelligent systems design, smart service design, and innovative multimedia entertainment. The School is home to over 900 undergraduate and postgraduate students annually, of which approximately 85 study at the doctoral level. The School provides a well-equipped teaching and learning environment in the Jockey Club Innovation Tower, a landmark building designed by the late Zaha Hadid.

🎉From the Studio to Apple's Global Campaign

🌳Echo Forest, a project by Sitian Cen, a student in the MSc in Innovative Multimedia Entertainment (MScIME) programme and supervised by Dr Giovanni Lion, has been featured in Apple's global campaign "Great Ideas Start Here" and its annual student creative showcase "Learning with Intelligence" (学以智用).

The campaign highlights how students and young creators bring innovative ideas to life using Mac. Sitian’s work stood out for its unique creative approach, combining computational art, sound, and emotion to create visual representations of forest growth. The project offers an interactive experience that connects technology, creativity, and nature.

✨Apple's Learning with Intelligence showcase featured Echo Forest as one of the selected projects, recognising its innovative AI-powered applications and contribution to conversations on the future of creativity and technology.

We are proud to see our student receive international recognition for creativity and innovation.

Join us at the 19th PhD Colloquium on Design Research (10 & 12 November 2026), a premier platform for doctoral researchers to exchange ideas, share cutting-edge design research, and engage with leading academics from around the world. This year's theme, Building Translational Design Knowledge, explores how design knowledge can be created, transformed, and applied to address complex societal challenges.

The programme brings together doctoral presentations, expert feedback, a poster exhibition, and the Leadership Forum on Translational Knowledge on 11 November, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.

We are proud to share that airLingual, an innovative air-conditioning concept developed by students Hugo Liu, Kimmy Liu and Asta Mao led by Prof. Benny Leong and Prof. Sylvia Liu from PolyU Design's Master of Design (MDes) in Innovative Business Design in collaboration with Bosch Home Comfort Group APAC has received the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2026.

Guided by the philosophy of "Simple as Air", airLingual reimagines climate control through intuitive gesture-based interaction, replacing traditional remotes, apps and screens with natural, human-centred experiences. Powered by local Edge AI, the concept promotes accessibility, privacy and user wellbeing, while making everyday comfort more seamless and inclusive.

Join us for an inspiring Information Design Lecture featuring Seewhy (Ng Cho Yiu), PolyU Communication Design graduate, cross-media artist, and designer.

From Hong Kong to the Netherlands and back, Seewhy will share her journey from communication design to the heritage craft of letterpress type casting. Through the Hong Kong Type Recasting Project, she has helped revive historic Hong Kong type and explored why it matters to carry traditions forward.

✨ Learn about design, heritage, typography, and creative exploration across cultures.
✨ Get a chance to handle lead type cast by Seewhy herself.

The lecture is moderated by Prof. Brian Kwok, Programme Leader of BA Information Design at PolyU Design.

The lecture will be conducted in Cantonese.

On 27 September 2026, the Li Ka Shing Design and Innovation Centre (LKSD&I) collaborated with an educational partner to deliver a customised Designpreneur X STEM workshop for students from Kwun Tong Government Secondary School.

Led by Prof. Luke Feast, Assistant Professor at PolyU Design, the workshop explored the theme of Circular Economy through hands-on design activities, idea development and rapid prototyping. Working in teams, students applied creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to develop and present their concepts.

Final proposals were evaluated based on: ✅ Idea Originality ✅ STEM Integration ✅ Prototyping Quality ✅ Presentation

Through the workshop, students gained first-hand experience in design thinking, entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary innovation while learning from their peers and receiving feedback from PolyU Design academics.
