Written in Stone: Cork Students Bring Forgotten Stories Back to Life
St. Joseph’s Cemetery research and RECLAIM exhibition to feature on RTÉ One’s Nationwide, Friday 18 September at 7pm
Over the past several years, students from the Cultural and Heritage Studies course at Cork College of FET, Tramore Road Campus, led by course director Shane Lehane, have been quietly uncovering the stories written into the stones of Cork’s historic St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Ballyphehane.
Their painstaking archaeological and local history research will feature on RTÉ One’s Nationwide on Friday 18 September at 7pm.
Working with archaeologist John Tierney of the Historic Graves Project and Cork City Archaeologist Ciara Brett, students have photographed, transcribed and researched hundreds of grave memorials, many of which are at risk of being lost to weather, vegetation and time. With assistance from Ella Motherway and Geospatial Technology students, their findings are being compiled into a substantial online database available.
