Inspiring the Next Generation of Outdoor Educators!
recently welcomed an enthusiastic group of Transition Year students for the pilot of our new TY Outdoor Education Taster Day, designed to introduce young people to the skills, responsibilities and career opportunities involved in working in the outdoor education sector.
The students enjoyed a packed day of practical, hands-on learning, including:
Powerboat handling, marine safety and boat operations
Outdoor first aid, CPR and defibrillator awareness
Ropework, splicing and equipment maintenance
Risk assessment and identifying workplace hazards
Exploring pathways into outdoor education, adventure sports and future careers
It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm, confidence and teamwork demonstrated by all participants throughout the day.
The programme offered students a valuable insight into the diverse skills required of outdoor education instructors, while highlighting the many opportunities available through further education, training, volunteering and participation in outdoor adventure activities.
Congratulations to all our participants, who represented their schools so positively. We hope the experience has inspired some future careers in the outdoors!
A special thanks to the instructional team at Kinsale Outdoor Education Centre for making this pilot programme such a success.

We were delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor Damian Boylan to CCFET-Bishopstown Campus recently for a tour to showcase some of the exciting learning opportunities available across our programmes.

From Apprenticeships and the state-of-the-art NZEB training facilities to our vibrant Beauty and Hair departments, the visit showcased the breadth of opportunities available to learners and the strong links between education, industry, and sustainability.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the visit such a success, and to the Lord Mayor for taking an interest in the valuable work taking place across our Campus.

We were delighted recently as Cork College of FET Ballincollig Youthreach marked three decades of supporting young people through practical learning, personal development and new opportunities. Guests were privileged to hear directly from past and present students, who shared their stories and the different pathways they have taken through further education, training and employment.

Since opening in 1995, the centre has provided an inclusive alternative learning environment where young people can build confidence, discover their talents, gain qualifications and progress to further education, training or employment.

The anniversary celebration brought together current and former learners, staff, families, Board of Management members and supporters of the centre. Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Damian Boylan unveiled a commemorative plaque recognising this important milestone. He stated: “What I can say, looking in from the outside, is that places like this matter enormously. Because education is not one-size-fits-all. People learn differently. People develop at different times. And sometimes a young person simply needs a different environment, another opportunity, and somebody who is prepared to see the potential in them. For thirty years, that is what people in this centre have provided.”

Denis Leamy, Chief Executive, praised the centre as an example of what can be achieved when talented educators, supportive communities and determined learners come together with a shared purpose.

We congratulate Coordinator Karen Hogan and everyone—past and present—who has contributed to the Ballincollig Youthreach story. Here’s to the next chapter of helping young people recognise their abilities, reach their potential and take their next step.

Well done to our Boxing Clever class of 2025 / 2026 who graduated recently with QQI L4 Health related fitness, QQI L4 Information Technology and QQI L5 Community addiction studies.

Boxing Clever is an integrated fitness, educational and substance use recovery programme. It is an interagency approach; The HSE, The Recovery Academy and Cork ETB working together to meet the needs of participants.
