Just because something isn't counted doesnt mean it doesn't count! Sharing a recent RTÉ Brainstorm article on breastfeeding by Prof Jane Bourke, on unpaid work and the limitations of GDP.

📌 Breastfeeding creates economic value, even though it is unpaid and largely invisible in economics measures such as GDP.
📌 Human milk has significant economic value that conventional economic metrics overlook.
📌 What we measure shapes what we recognise and prioritise.

This is central to the MaxBf project at UCC, where we are exploring the economic value of breastfeeding in Ireland and what could be gained from improving breastfeeding rates.

New research: First responders’ experiences and training needs at the scene of a suspected su***de in Ireland: A mixed methods study

First responders generally expressed compassionate, non-judgemental attitudes towards su***de prevention and people experiencing suicidal distress.
Many identified a need for further training and greater confidence in responding to suspected su***des, particularly when communicating with bereaved individuals and families.
Attending these scenes can have a significant emotional impact, with first responders highlighting the importance of appropriate support following these experiences.
The findings point to the need for stronger provision of su***de prevention and postvention training, alongside accessible and adequate support for first responders.

🎉💙 A wonderful day of celebration at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC! We were delighted to celebrate our BSc Nursing (General, Mental Health and Intellectual Disability) and BSc Midwifery students at their End of Programme Celebration.

🎓 It was a chance to recognise their hard work, dedication and achievements, and to celebrate the friendships, memories and experiences they have shared along the way. We are so proud of everything our students have achieved and excited to see the impact they will make in the years ahead.

💫 A sincere thank you to Eileen Kelleher, Clinical Placement Coordinator (CPC) with Horizons Cork and a UCC Nursing graduate of 2019, for joining us and sharing her experiences since graduating. Her reflections on the opportunities and career paths that followed graduation were both inspiring and encouraging for our students as they prepare for the next stage of their journeys.

For nurses, midwives, and healthcare professionals, listening matters. So does asking the difficult question, taking someone's distress seriously, and helping them connect with appropriate support. But su***de prevention belongs to all of us. 💬 Start the conversation. 👂 Listen without judgement. 🤝 Stay connected. ❤️ Help someone find support. You don't need to have the perfect words.
