🇮🇳 Meet Gareema Naik 🇮🇳

From the coastal city of Valsad, Gujarat, India to Vascular and Interventional Radiology at UAB, Gareema brings empathy, curiosity, creativity, and a strong commitment to becoming an exceptional physician.

Growing up in the close-knit community of Valsad taught Gareema early on the importance of empathy and caring for those around her. Her desire to pursue medicine became even stronger while witnessing the medical journey of a close relative. Seeing how a physician could alleviate suffering and transform a patient’s life showed her the tremendous impact of compassionate, high-quality healthcare. Since then, her clinical experiences have reinforced an important lesson: excellent medicine requires not only strong diagnostic thinking, but also the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients.

Outside the hospital, Gareema has a wonderfully creative side. She enjoys jogging along the beach, listening to music, sketching, and even writing poetry in Hindi and English. She also keeps up with global news and enjoys unwinding with a good cricket match. Sketching and painting, in particular, have taught her patience, observation, and attention to detail, while running helps build the discipline and resilience she carries into her medical training.

And when Gareema needs a taste of home, nothing compares with her mother's malai kofta with dal fry and jeera rice. More than a favorite meal, it represents family, comfort, and the memories of sharing food together back home.

Gareema’s immediate goal is to pursue an Internal Medicine residency in the United States and build a strong foundation in caring for patients with complex medical conditions. Looking further ahead, she hopes to become an internist in an academic medical center, combining patient care with clinical research and contributing to the broader medical community.

Her experience at UAB has been an important step toward that future. Arriving in a completely new healthcare system initially felt daunting, but the welcoming environment and support she received helped her adapt quickly. During her Vascular and Interventional Radiology elective, she has had the opportunity to encounter complex cases in a high-volume clinical environment and observe how advanced procedures, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centered care come together.

Gareema, your compassion, creativity, curiosity, and determination to keep growing reflect the spirit of our IVMS program. We are proud to have you at UAB and excited to see where your journey in Internal Medicine and academic medicine takes you next!

🇩🇪 Meet Marie-Therese Borrosch 🇩🇪

From Düsseldorf, Germany to Breast Surgical Oncology and Adult Heart Surgery at UAB, Marie-Therese brings precision, creativity, and a strong commitment to compassionate surgical care.

Growing up in Berlin, Marie-Therese was surrounded by diversity and multiculturalism from an early age. Interacting with people from different backgrounds taught her the importance of empathy, adaptability, and understanding each person as an individual.

Outside the hospital, Marie-Therese has always enjoyed staying active. Track and field, gymnastics, fitness, and chess are among her interests, combining physical discipline with focus and strategy. She also loves traveling and experiencing new cultures, something that has broadened her perspective and strengthened her ability to connect with people from different backgrounds.

Looking ahead, Marie-Therese hopes to pursue Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a field she finds especially compelling because of its ability to restore both function and confidence. Her interests span reconstruction following cancer or trauma, aesthetic surgery, and burn care, and she hopes to build a career that combines technical excellence with research, surgical innovation, and empathy.

Her experience at UAB has given her an especially meaningful perspective on that future. During Breast Surgical Oncology, she was fascinated by the multidisciplinary approach to patient care, particularly seeing breast surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists work together to develop individualized treatment plans around each patient's unique needs. For someone interested in reconstructive surgery, seeing this continuum of cancer care firsthand has been particularly valuable.

Marie-Therese, your drive, creativity, and commitment to both the technical and human sides of surgery embody the spirit of our IVMS program. We are proud to have you at UAB and excited to see where your journey in surgery takes you next!

🌍 Yesterday, we had the pleasure of spending time with another wonderful group of UAB International Visiting Medical Students!

Our IVMS lunches are always a highlight of each rotation, a chance to step away from the clinical setting, get to know our students better, hear about their experiences at UAB, and learn more about where they hope their medical careers will take them.

During lunch, Dr. Zayzafoon spoke with the students about the U.S. residency application process and shared practical advice on preparing for a successful Match. The conversation covered interviews, research, networking, building a competitive application, and plenty of questions from the students about navigating the next steps in their careers.

Each student also received a UAB International Medical Education T-shirt and water bottle as a small reminder of their time with us.

To our visiting students: thank you for choosing UAB for your clinical electives and for becoming part of our international medical education community. We are excited to see where your journeys take you, and remember that your UAB family is always cheering you on! 💚

🇬🇷 Meet Dimitrios Liakopoulos 🇬🇷

From Thessaloniki, Greece to the Highlands General Surgery elective at UAB, Dimitrios brings a love of medicine, history, cultures, and exploration to his experience as an international visiting medical student.

Growing up in Thessaloniki, Dimitrios takes particular pride in coming from the country of Hippocrates, whose legacy and enduring influence on medicine continue to inspire his own journey as a future physician.

Dimitrios is also passionate about languages and the connections they create between people and cultures. He speaks Greek, English, Italian, Spanish, and German, reflecting a curiosity about the world that extends far beyond the classroom and hospital.

Looking toward the future, Dimitrios hopes to pursue General Surgery, building a career centered not only on surgical skill but also on helping patients feel safe and supported as they navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

His experience at UAB Highlands has given him an opportunity to see that vision of surgery in action. One of the highlights of his elective has been exposure to minimally invasive and robotic surgery, allowing him to witness how surgical innovation can be combined with thoughtful, patient-centered care. The experience has deepened his appreciation for the evolving possibilities of modern surgery and strengthened his enthusiasm for the field.

Dimitrios, we are proud to have you at UAB and look forward to seeing where your next chapter, both in surgery and around the world, takes you!
