International Medical Education provides international trainees with strong clinical and research experience, as well as an education of the current U.S.

UAB International Medical Education creates global opportunities for students and scholars through clinical training, research, and partnerships, strengthening education and improving health across borders. medical system as it is conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Trainees are accepted to the program through well-established international sponsor organizations, which recruit competitive applicants to join the program. Throughout their tenure in the program, trainees actively participate and work alongside UAB students, researchers, and physicians at UAB research and medical centers. Ultimately, trainees significantly enhance their education, research experience, and diagnostic and treatment expertise.

🇱🇰🇦🇪 Insiya Sajjad Hussain Saifudeen 🇦🇪🇱🇰

Born and raised in Dubai with Sri Lankan roots, Insiya joined us at UAB for an Infectious Diseases elective, where she worked with both the General Infectious Diseases and Immunocompromised and Oncology Infectious Diseases services.

Her experience at UAB gave her the opportunity to work through complex infections, strengthen her clinical reasoning, and present a teaching session on Beta-D-Glucan. She especially enjoyed UAB’s learning environment, including noon conferences and grand rounds.

Outside of medicine, Insiya has been horseback riding since she was young and loves show jumping. She also enjoys swimming and basketball.

Insiya hopes to pursue an Internal Medicine residency in the United States and eventually combine patient care, research, and teaching at an academic medical center.

We loved having Insiya at UAB and wish her all the best in the next chapter of her journey!

🇯🇴 Meet Michael Nijmeh 🇯🇴

From Amman, Jordan to Vascular and Interventional Radiology at UAB, Michael brings a passion for physiology, clinical reasoning, and patient-centered care.

Michael grew up in Amman before moving to Bahrain at 18 to attend medical school at RCSI. As the first physician in his family, he has navigated much of his medical journey independently. Growing up in a culture where family is central also shaped how he sees patient care—recognizing that illness often affects an entire family, not just the individual.

Outside medicine, Michael has played the piano since age five, an experience that taught him patience, discipline, and the value of being coached. He also enjoys cooking, traveling, and gathering with family and friends. His favorite food is mansaf, Jordan’s national dish, which for him represents home, family, and celebration.

Michael plans to pursue Internal Medicine, with a future interest in cardiovascular medicine and procedural care. His month in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at UAB strengthened that goal. By scrubbing in, presenting on rounds, assisting with cases, and learning directly from fellows and faculty, he gained greater confidence and a new ability to use imaging as a clinical reasoning tool rather than simply relying on a report.

As a native Arabic speaker, Michael also values the connection and trust that can develop when patients are able to communicate in their own language.

Michael, your curiosity, discipline, and commitment to understanding the whole patient have made you a wonderful addition to our IVMS community. We are proud to have you at UAB and excited to see where your journey in Internal Medicine takes you next!

🇹🇼 Meet ChenEn “Sean” Lin 🇹🇼

From Kaohsiung, Taiwan to Vascular and Interventional Radiology at UAB, Sean brings an international perspective, a fascination with technology, and a clear vision for where he hopes medicine will take him.

Sean grew up in Kaohsiung, a vibrant city in southern Taiwan, while also spending time in San Jose, California during his elementary school years. Experiencing two different environments early in life helped broaden his perspective and curiosity about the world.

Outside medicine, Sean enjoys movies, music, cooking, photography, and videography, and keeps a close eye on global affairs. He is also a space enthusiast fascinated by aerospace and the possibilities created by scientific and technological advancement. His favorite taste of home is a classic Taiwanese combination: fried chicken cutlet with a mango smoothie.

Sean hopes to pursue Internal Medicine and eventually specialize in Interventional Cardiology, combining direct patient care with clinical research as an academic physician. He is particularly drawn to the ability of interventional medicine to use technical skill and rapid decision-making to make an immediate difference in a patient's life.

His Vascular and Interventional Radiology elective at UAB has brought that career goal into even sharper focus. Regularly scrubbing in, assisting with cases, and observing complex vascular interventions gave him valuable hands-on procedural exposure and strengthened his desire to one day work in the cath lab performing life-saving interventions.

Sean, your curiosity, enthusiasm for innovation, and commitment to combining science with patient care have made you a wonderful addition to our IVMS community. We are proud to have you at UAB and excited to see where your journey in Internal Medicine and Interventional Cardiology takes you next!

🇲🇾 Meet Yau Yong Sheng 🇲🇾

From Penang, Malaysia to the Thoracic Surgery elective at UAB, Yong Sheng’s path to medicine was anything but predictable—and that is part of what makes his story so interesting.

Growing up on the island of Penang, often called the “Pearl of the Orient,” Yong Sheng never imagined he would become a physician. After high school, he began studying microbiology at Monash University, where he discovered how much he enjoyed science and medicine became something he genuinely enjoyed—whether on the wards, in the operating room, clinic, research, teaching, or simply learning something new.

Outside medicine, Yong Sheng enjoys gaming and cooking, a hobby he picked up while studying in Dublin. He especially enjoys the challenge and precision of French cuisine. He is also beginning to appreciate the outdoor culture of the American South and hopes to explore more of it.

Yong Sheng plans to pursue Internal Medicine, and his Thoracic Surgery elective at UAB has given him a new perspective on that goal. Seeing complex anatomy firsthand and observing how teams use imaging, clinical judgment, and multidisciplinary discussion to decide when—and when not—to intervene has strengthened his understanding of caring for the whole patient.

His experience at UAB has also allowed him to grow in confidence and responsibility. Over the course of the elective, he progressed from observing to pre-rounding, presenting and clerking patients, and assisting with procedures under supervision. More importantly, he learned the value of being prepared, asking questions, accepting feedback, and continuously improving.

Yong Sheng, your unconventional journey into medicine, curiosity, and commitment to learning have made you a wonderful addition to our IVMS community. We are proud to have you at UAB and wish you continued success as you pursue Internal Medicine.

This year marks the 26th World Heart Day! Created to focus on heart health, this day highlights ways to prevent and manage cardiovascular disease, while also urging the government to act by creating action plans and universal access to health prevention, treatment, and care.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women globally with an estimated 2.4 million women diagnosed in 2024.

Women around the world are urged to know about the risk factors of breast cancer, as well as the signs so that they can report any changes to their healthcare providers as soon as possible!
