The program offers a concentrated academic experience for students pursuing an associate of agriculture degree in preparation for careers in the agricultural or green industries. Choose from Applied Agricultural Management where you can focus on agribusiness, crop production, or livestock production or Landscape and Turf Management where you can focus on landscape or golf/sports turf management.

Caleb Greene completed his summer internship with Wi******er Equipment Co in Wi******er, Virginia, where he spent time observing and learning from departments across the dealership. Through hands-on experiences, Caleb accompanied sales representatives on customer visits and equipment deliveries, gaining valuable insight into both the sales process and customer relationships.

One of the highlights of his internship was learning how each department contributes to the success of the business. He also enjoyed meeting new people and developing a deeper understanding of the equipment industry and its many career paths.

Wi******er Equipment is a full-service equipment dealership serving customers with equipment sales, service, parts, and support.

Students in Fundamentals of Turfgrass Management have been studying turfgrass selection, adaptation, and identification. Recently, they joined Dr. Tom Kuhar and his research team to assist with a white grub research trial.

Students helped collect data by rolling back sections of sod and identifying and counting grub species beneath the surface. Their participation not only supported the research team but also provided an opportunity to experience firsthand how applied research can inform industry best management practices.

Students in the Grain Crops Management class recently spent time in the field learning two important agronomy skills: estimating corn yield before harvest and collecting soil samples.

Using standing corn, students calculated yield estimates that can help producers evaluate crop performance before harvest. They also collected soil samples both by hand and with an automatic soil sampler mounted on a Gator, comparing different approaches used in the industry. Soil sampling is a key part of any agronomic system, providing information that helps guide nutrient and crop management decisions.

Experiences like these give students practical skills and real-world knowledge they can apply throughout their agricultural careers.

Students in the Landscape Practicum class recently participated in a snow removal lab at the Urban Horticulture Center led by . The lab gave students the opportunity to operate a skid steer with a plow attachment, as well as Snowrators equipped with 4-foot blades and brine tanks.

Experiences like this help students gain familiarity with the equipment and techniques used in professional landscape and snow management operations.

Special thanks to Six Parker and Brian Shirkey for sharing their time and expertise with our students. Another great day of hands-on learning in the Landscape Practicum course!

Hands-on learning extends well beyond the classroom! Last month, students in the Grain Crops Management and Nutrient Management Planning courses attended the Kentland Farm Field Day, where they explored current topics impacting agriculture.

Students learned about drought management, virtual fencing, alfalfa and small grain forage research, alternative forages, and w**d management. They also had the opportunity to connect with agricultural equipment and service providers, as well as local Extension professionals, gaining valuable insight into research, technology, and career opportunities in the industry.

Thank you to Virginia Cooperative Extension for hosting this informative field day and providing our students with another outstanding experiential learning opportunity!

Hands-on learning is underway in the greenhouse! Students in our Plant Science for Agriculture and Green Industries course have launched their semester-long plant research projects.

Working in teams, students identify a problem, develop a hypothesis, and conduct experiments to test their ideas. At the end of the semester, they will present their findings and share what they learned through the research process.

These projects give students practical experience in research, problem-solving, teamwork, and data collection while applying concepts learned in the classroom.

Last week, turf students assisted Jason Ratcliff with his biannual greens aeration program on the Virginia Tech Golf Course.

Each student had the opportunity to participate in multiple parts of the process, including mowing, verticutting, aerating, picking up cores, topdressing, and dragging in sand. By helping with this important golf course cultural practice, students gained valuable hands-on experience while supporting a process that requires significant labor.

Our peer mentors recently shared their internship experiences with our first-year students, offering valuable insights into the many opportunities available through our program.

Internships are a cornerstone of the Ag Tech student experience, providing hands-on learning, professional connections, and a chance to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. We are grateful to the internship hosts who invest in our students and make these meaningful experiences possible.

A special thank you to peer mentors Alex Grasser, Anthony Liberatore, Matthew Gibson, Nataleigh Darlington, Nevaeh Luttrell, and Thomas Snoddy for taking the time to mentor and encourage the next class of students. We look forward to highlighting their individual internship experiences soon!

Our students spent time today exploring internships, careers, and new connections at the Virginia Tech Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Life Sciences Career Fair. It was great to see their preparation pay off as they confidently networked throughout the event!

One of the best parts? Seeing so many Agricultural Technology alumni back on campus, representing their organizations and helping fellow Hokies take the next step in their careers.
