Congratulations to Endre Takacs, Dipti, Hunter Staiger, and Abrar Faiyaz of Clemson University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. Their research was recently published in *Nature Communications*.

Working with an international team that includes Japan’s National Institute for Fusion Science, the University of Electro-Communications, and Université Grenoble Alpes, they used precision spectroscopy of highly charged ions at the Tokyo-EBIT facility to show that the lutetium nucleus is slightly smaller than its neighboring ytterbium nucleus. The finding resolves a long-standing puzzle about the size of rare-earth nuclei and opens a new way to study nuclear structure. Our partners in Japan recently highlighted the result.

A wonderful example of international collaboration—and of Clemson folks doing world-class science.

For military appreciation week, we are celebrating our alumni who once served in the military.
Today, we are talking about Joel Ashley Slaton. In 1959, he graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Physics. But before that Joel was a proud veteran of the Korean War who served in the Army from 1952-1954. Thank you for your service Joel.

September's Fantastic Physics Student is Shayna! Shayna has been selected as last month's Fantastic Physics Student due to Shayna's hard work at University of Illinois' REU and assistance in starting a biophysics club on campus.
In the future, Shayna plans to pursue a PhD in Physics to eventually work in either biophysics or condensed matter research.
Congratulations Shayna and great job!!

So glad this is a summer tradition!

It's a summer tradition now! Thanks to our board member and retired faculty member from the Clemson University Physics & Astronomy, Dr. Terry Tritt, a group of our kids and staff enjoyed a visit to the Clemson Planetarium. This field trip included Clemson Ice Cream - '55 Exchange and lunch out. Out of this world!

I hope everyone had a great First Friday! Shoutout to our Society of Physics Students for walking in the parade!!
