Dr. Katherene Anguah, Assistant Professor, recieved an NIH R03 grant titled “Integration of Omics Data to Understand Dietary Fiber’s Effects.”

Dr. Taylor Kelty, Assistant Research Professor, received an NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award titled “Bioenergetic Reprogramming Through Ketogenic Enzymes: A Mitochondrial Strategy for Alzheimer’s Disease.”

Dr. Jacqueline Limberg, Millsap Distinguished Associate Professor, received an NIH R21 grant titled “Beta3-Adrenergic Receptors and Cardiovascular Function in Aging Women.”

Dr. Jaume Padilla, Professor, and Dr. Jacqueline Limberg received an NIH R01 grant titled “Interplay of Central and Peripheral Vascular Effects of Insulin in Obesity.”

Good News in FNES! 🎉🎉

Drushya Ramesh- Food Science PhD candidate in Dr. Laksmikantha Channaiah’s lab recieved first place in the graduate student poster competition at the CAFNR Resesrch Symposium in October.

Caitlyn Winn- Nutrition PhD candidate successfully completed her comprehensive exam.

Sophia Sapp- Food Science graduate student won the University of Missouri System’s Re*****on R. Williams Award. These awards are given in memory of Mr. Williams and his outstanding service as student representative to the University of Missouri Board of Curators (2020-2022).

Oscar Bomgaars- Food Science undergraduate student presented at IFT Chicago and places second in the undergraduate student research competition.

Congratulations to Dr. Scott Rector on receiving the School of Medicine Research Council’s 2026 Excellence in Research Mentoring Award 🎉🎉

A little bit about the Excellence in Research Mentoring Award:

Eligibility & Criteria:

Nominees must be MU School of Medicine faculty with a sustained record of mentoring trainees and/or junior faculty at Mizzou.

Candidates should demonstrate successful research mentorship, foster a supportive research environment, and promote mentees’ personal and professional growth.

How Mentors are Nominated:

Medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career MU School of Medicine faculty may submit a nomination letter (maximum 2 pages) highlighting the nominee’s contributions to research mentorship.

Dr. Rector will be presented with the award at the annual Health Sciences Research Day on November 13, 2026.

We are very excited and proud that Dr. Rector has been recognized for his mentorship contributions to the University. Please join us in congratulating Dr.Rector!

• A paper from the Rector Lab, titled “Relationship between serum beta-hydroxy-butyrate and hepatic fatty acid oxidation in individuals with obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,” received the 2025 Best Research Paper Award from the American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism!

Science, discovery, and community at the CAFNR Showcase!

This past Saturday, the Division of Food, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences (FNES) was excited to take part in the CAFNR Showcase and share a glimpse of how our work connects science to the foods we eat, human health, and the world around us.

At the FNES tent, visitors of all ages had the opportunity to explore science through hands-on activities, including:

-Sampling healthy snack mixes.
-Testing hand-grip strength and learning about physical
function.
-Extracting natural colors from corn
-Exploring how pH can influence color changes
-Learning how FNES is a one-stop solution for understanding
the safety and development processed foods.

Our tent also served as a passport stamp stop for children making their way through the Showcase on their journey to pick out their pumpkins! 🎃

We truly enjoyed interacting with children, families, and community members and sharing how the work happening within FNES can make an impact. From the foods we develop and study to the science behind human health and physical performance.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, experimented with us, and helped make the day such a success! We loved bringing science out of the lab and into the community. 💙🌽

Internship spotlight! 🌟

This summer, Will a senior in NEP, is serving as an Exercise Physiologist Intern at the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Clinic at University of Missouri Hospital.

From educating cardiac patients about the benefits of rehabilitation and assisting with early recovery in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit to supporting individualized treatment plans in outpatient rehab, Will is gaining hands-on experience across all phases of patient care.

Will credits the NEP program, especially Professor Smith’s Cardiac Rehab course, for preparing him with the essential skills such as EKG arrhythmia identification, exercise prescription, and personalized patient care planning.

While he’s excited to continue building clinical and patient care skills, one lesson has stood out above all else: the power of making meaningful connections. Will says the clinic staff and patients have welcomed him like family, creating a culture where people go above and beyond because they genuinely care about one another.

We’re so proud to see Will applying his classroom knowledge in a setting that is changing lives every day! 🐯

Congratulations to our outstanding award recipients:

🏆 John Cullen, NEP PhD candidate, was honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award.

🏆 Lilli Caldwell, recent graduate of the Coordinated Master’s Dietetics Program, was recognized for attending the AAAS CASE Workshop in Washington, D.C.

🏆 Darius Miller, Administrative Support for FNES, recieved the Graduate Support Staff Award.

Today we are highlighting NEP student, Allison David!

Allison’s future plans after college are “To stay at Mizzou and stay 3 more years to get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.”

Allison’s favorite memory is “Performing a blood locate test with Dr. Padilla and Dr. Credeur in front of the whole class!”

Allison’s advice to future tigers is “Get involved! Say yes! Get out of your comfort zone, meet new people, apply for the position; college is what you make of it!”
