Over the weekend at the Daisy Chain Fields Music Festival, Olivia Rodrigo raised $20 million for women’s nonprofits after Melinda French Gates joined her onstage to pledge $10 million.

“Daisy Chain Fields is a great example of women’s philanthropy in action. Women and girls are coming together across generations around causes they care about, and they are giving more than just money, they are being generous with their time, voices, relationships, and platforms. WPI research shows that generosity can be passed from parents to children, with an especially strong connection for daughters, and I love seeing this dynamic at play here,” said Jacqueline Ackerman, Director of the Women’s Philanthropy Institute.

“Olivia Rodrigo is optimizing her celebrity influence for more than just entertainment. She’s engaging in causes that matter to her and her core audience and using her platform to raise awareness and generate dollars for nonprofits. Joining with Melinda French Gates raises Rodrigo’s credibility and increases the impact, bringing generations of women together for a common goal and proving the immense potential of pairing an emerging philanthropist with an established leader,” said Genevieve Shaker, Ph.D., Professor of Philanthropic Studies and Donald A. Campbell Chair in Fundraising Leadership.

Chakshu Chhabra, an IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy student pursuing her master’s in philanthropic studies, is driven to understand philanthropy on a global scale. While working in the social impact sector in India, she knew the practical skills of philanthropy, but not the full picture. She had certain questions that came to mind about philanthropy, specifically moral and ethical questions.

We are sad to hear of the passing of Dolly Parton.

Dolly wasn’t just a country music legend; her philanthropy has changed millions of lives.

A few highlights of her incredible impact:

▪️Imagination Library: Created through the Dollywood Foundation in 1988, this signature initiative has gifted over 270 million free books to children under five worldwide.
▪️Education & Support: Her foundation funds local college scholarships, dropout-prevention programs, and 100% tuition coverage for Dollywood employees.
▪️Disaster Relief: She established the My People Fund to provide direct financial aid to families who lost their homes in the 2016 Tennessee wildfires.
▪️Medical Research: She donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, helping fund critical research for the COVID-19 vaccine.

In recognition of her decades of generosity, Parton was awarded the prestigious Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy in 2022.
