Reminder that we are currently inviting applications for an instructional track faculty position (non-tenure track, open rank), beginning August 2027. This position will primarily contribute to administration and instruction in introductory courses for both majors and non-majors. Responsibilities of this position include providing instruction in lecture and laboratory settings and overseeing the teaching of the laboratory and/or discussion sections.

Students in the Entomology Lab course (BIOL:2246) were hard at work earlier this month designing experiments to answer their own questions about insect behavior using Madagascar hissing cockroaches.🪳

This course is designed to study the most species-rich and diverse of all animals: insects. Students have the opportunity to work in both lab and field settings while gaining hands-on experience with insect collection and preservation, DNA extraction and sequencing, and analysis of evolutionary and ecological data.

On Monday, October 26th, our iBio Graduate Student Seminar speakers will be Hubert Kicinski (HE Lab), Avery Wilson (Smolikove Lab), and Emma Valcourt (Logsdon Lab). The first seminar will begin at 3:30 PM in Kollros Auditorium (Biology Building East, Room 101).

Nyla Valencia, a Biology undergraduate student and a member of the Iowa Women's Wrestling team, is the campus representative for Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit organization that matches children with chronic illnesses and disabilities with college athletic teams.

Our seminar this week will be led by Anthony Fischer, MD, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics – Pulmonary Medicine (Stead Family Department of Pediatrics) at the University of Iowa. The Science In Action (SIA) club is hosting guest speaker Dr. Aric Waltz, OD, tomorrow, October 15th, from 5:00-6:00 PM in Room 106, Biology Building East (BBE). Dr. Waltz is an optometrist at eyecare facilities in Orange City, Hawarden, and Sioux Center, Iowa, and will share insights into the profession, practice settings, and career path. All students are welcome to attend!

We had a fantastic time at the 2026 UI Department of Biology Research Retreat! Highlights included oral presentations from faculty and graduate students, a poster session, and lots of great food from Hurts Donut Co. and Catered By Charlotte. A huge thank you to the Coralville Public Library for hosting us!
