Before presenting Alex's Sad Boys in Harpy Land at the James Theater this Thursday, self-proclaimed “experimental clown artist” Alex Tatrsky joined University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts for a masterclass where students were encouraged to discover what happens when performance breaks the rules. 🤡

We love creating opportunities for students to engage directly with working artists, gaining insight into their creative processes and then inviting the entire community into the conversation through presenting their work!

Wednesday, October 21: Tank and the Bangas
Tank and the Bangas nabbed the band’s first Grammy Award in 2025 for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album for The Heart, The Mind, The Soul. Toss in styles including funk, soul, hip hop, rock, and even something the band calls “Soulful Disney,” and you get music both standout and celebratory.
Note: This is a standing room show with very limited seating.

Friday, October 23: Braxton Cook
Vocalist and saxophonist, Braxton Cook is a fresh voice in contemporary jazz with an ear toward R&B sensibilities. His songs can recall late-night slow jams or heady, blue-note workouts—and sometimes both. Cook has toured with luminaries like Christian McBride and worked with pop stars like Rihanna.

Ten years ago, Hancher Auditorium was one of three new University of Iowa arts buildings opened with great fanfare, marking a major milestone in the university’s recovery from the devastating 2008 flood.

For André Perry, the Chuck Swanson Executive Director of Hancher Auditorium, executive director of the Office of Performing Arts and Engagement, and assistant provost for arts and creativity, the moment captured both the challenges of the preceding years and the promise of what lay ahead.

“After the many challenges of the flood, that concert felt like a celebration and a reckoning at once,” Perry says. “It brought us back together after a long journey.”

Ten years ago, three University of Iowa arts buildings opened with great fanfare, marking a major milestone in the university’s recovery from the devastating 2008 flood. Together, the buildings represented more than a return to campus; they sparked a new era for the arts at Iowa.
