Congratulations to J. Nick Badgerow (J.D. ’76) of Spencer Fane, who was recently recognized by the Kansas Bar Foundation and Kansas Bar Association as this year's Professionalism Award recipient!

The Professionalism Award recognizes an individual who has practiced law for 10 or more years and who, through conduct, honesty, integrity and courtesy, best exemplifies the highest standards of the legal profession, as identified by the KBA Hallmarks of the Profession, and encourages other lawyers to follow those standards.

Earlier this month, Professor Kevin Keller presented at the University of Michigan for the American Society of International Law's Midwest Works-in-Progress Workshop! It featured papers by scholars from the United States, Canada and Hong Kong and his presentation examined new rules proposed by Chinese leaders to regulate interstate economic transactions.

The aroma of freshly brewed espresso filled the air as Italian exchange students from Sapienza University of Rome brought a taste of Italy to UMKC Law! Chiara Consorti and Claudia Aleandri shared a piece of their culture by hosting an espresso-making demonstration for their fellow law students. The duo invited student volunteer Morgan Foster to join in the fun and learn the art of preparing traditional Italian espresso. Following the demonstration, students enjoyed delicious Italian desserts and freshly brewed espresso.

From national leadership with the American Bar Association to new scholarly work, Associate Professor Barbara Zabawa provides an exceptional learning experience for UMKC Law students.

Along with her recent appointment as Chair-Elect of the American Bar Association's TIPS Medicine and Law Committee, she recently presented her latest paper on Medical Spa regulation at the Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Zabawa is an excellent resource for our students' learning about health and wellness law.

Founded in 1895 as the Kansas City School of Law, the school has grown from a private institution into part of a public university while building quite a legacy along the way.
UMKC Law is one of only six American law schools with both a U.S. President, Harry Truman, and a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Charles Whittaker, among its alumni.

Clinical Professor Brad Desnoyer recently represented the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law at New York Comic Con—the largest comic convention in North America with over 200,000 attendees. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund invited Professor Desnoyer—along with the former attorney for Nickelodeon, a Kirkland & Ellis IP partner, and the former president of DC Comics—to speak about the First Amendment, comic books, and the record-high number of book bans in the U.S.

Student services and reference librarian Ariel Newman recently began her term as president of the Mid-America Association of Law Libraries Executive Board!

Newman served as vice president last year and now takes on a new leadership role, serving academic, law firm and court library personnel from a 13-state region. Congratulations to her on this outstanding achievement!
