John Kelly has spent his career challenging the misconception that biological evolution happens too slowly to observe, Kelly examines its occurrence in real time, helping scientists better understand how populations adapt.

Kelly's research helps explain why genetic diversity persists and demonstrates evolution in real time.

Recognizing Kelly's research in evolutionary genetics, he has been selected as KU's winner of the 2026-2027 Big 12 Faculty of the Year Award. The award honors one outstanding faculty member from each of the conference's 16 schools for excellence in innovation and research.

In celebration of this accomplishment, Chancellor Douglas Girod will honor him with a trophy during halftime of the KU men’s basketball game on November 2.

⭐ Spotlight on Faculty Excellence ⭐

Congratulations to Devin Koestler, Professor of Biostatistics and Data Science, for being recognized as our most recent Spotlight on Faculty Excellence.

His research involves the development and application of statistical methodologies for high-throughput ‘omics’ data, with an emphasis on array-based DNA methylation data. Additional research interests include epigenetics and molecular epidemiology.

Dr. Koestler was recognized during a recent KU Volleyball game. 🏐 He was escorted by Shelly Hooks, Vice Chancellor for Research.

Join us on Nov. 11 for Erik Perrins' inaugural distinguished professor lecture!

University Distinguished Professor Erik Perrins, chair of the KU Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, will soon present his inaugural lecture on how deep-space signals reach Earth.

The lecture, “Finding the Signal in the Noise: The Hidden Magic of Error Correcting Codes in Deep-Space Radios,” will take place 5:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in Beren Petroleum Conference Center of Slawson Hall. Perrins will use the recent Artemis II test flight to illustrate how deep-space mathematics can translate into practical communication.

Building meaningful connections across cultures, disciplines and borders has been at the heart of Dr. Luciano Tosta's work at KU. Through teaching, research and international collaboration, he is creating opportunities that prepare students and scholars to engage with the world.

🌟Spotlight on Faculty Excellence🌟

Congratulations to Michael Wang, professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, for being recognized in our Spotlight on Faculty Excellence program!

Wang’s innovative research develops better therapeutics for treating infectious diseases and improving health outcomes.

Dr. Wang was celebrated during the Sept. 18 KU Volleyball game. 🏐 He was escorted by John Stobaugh, School of Pharmacy Associate Dean for Research.
