KU Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences The Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences (HSES) at KU offers degrees preparing student The department is housed in Robinson Center.

The department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences (HSES) has a proud history. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball and KU's first basketball coach and athletic director began teaching physical education in 1898 – twelve years before the School of Education came into existence. Notable alumni of the department include runner Billy Mills and football great Gale Sayers. In addition to its

academic programs, HSES offers research opportunities for faculty and students in a variety of laboratories and clinics. Current research endeavors include the Research and Coaching Performance Team, Amateur Sport Research Center, and various projects in the Applied Physiology Laboratory. The department is also active in community outreach with swim classes for children, a summer sports camp, and the Hawk Fitness Academy. In addition, the department offers physical activity classes (HSES 108) for KU students and fitness and recreation facilities for faculty and staff.

University of Kansas Well-Fit/Center for Youth Wellness and Fitness, in the Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences Department, Athletic Development Testing Day, summer 2026. Athletic Development is a youth jumping, sprinting, and strength program. The programming will accommodate the experience level of the child. Beginners will be exposed to many different types of jumping, sprinting, and lifting techniques. A major focus is placed on improving the skills associated with jumping, sprinting, and lifting techniques. In addition, youth will be introduced to sports performance testing. More emphasis will be placed on sports performance testing and tracking development during strength training to ensure increases in jumping and sprinting performance, along with strength gains for the youth with experience in the programming.
