The KU School of Architecture & Design has named recipients of its 2025 Architecture & Design Alumni Awards, recognizing graduates whose careers have advanced design, innovation and community impact.

This Thursday, the KU Design Professional Lecture Series welcomes Matthias Pliessnig, an internationally recognized artist, sculptor, and furniture designer known for transforming steam-bent wood into striking sculptural forms.

Blending digital technologies with traditional craftsmanship, Pliessnig creates work that explores movement, materiality, and the relationship between art, design, and making. His work has been exhibited internationally, collected by major museums, and featured in publications including Dwell, Interior Design, Forbes, and Architectural Record.

✨ A HUGE thank you to everyone who joined us for the KU School of Architecture & Design Open House last Friday!

We were thrilled to welcome nearly 300 family members and friends to campus for an afternoon of exploration, creativity, and connection.

From studio tours & maker space demonstrations to RISO prints at the KU Colorbar, laser-cut Jayhawk keychains, letterpress demos, and family photos with Baby Jay, it was an absolute joy to share the spaces where our students learn, create, and innovate.

A huge thank you to Illustrator Mirna Stubbs for spending two inspiring days with our students!

🎨 Following her lecture last Thursday, Mirna returned to campus Friday to lead a gouache + sketchbook workshop, sharing her creative process through live demonstrations and thoughtful guidance.

🏛️ Re-Generations: Current Architecture Practices in Mexico

The opening lecture will introduce the aims of the Fall 2026 Lecture Series: to shed light on the historical trajectory of architectural practice in Mexico, from its ancient origins to contemporary practices.

Alejandro Aptilon is an assistant teaching professor of architecture at KU ArcD and principal of an award-winning architectural practice founded in Mexico City in 1998. His firm has completed projects worldwide and has been recognized for its contributions to contemporary Mexican architecture.

This Friday's lecture draws on Aptilon's research into the architectural exchange between Mexico and the United States, introducing key modern and contemporary Mexican architects, including the series' guest speakers.

This synthesized introduction will provide context for the content, intentions, and reasoning underlying the architectural production of these practices with an emphasis on the work of Alejandro Aptilon Arquitectos.
