Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know a farmer’s worst nightmare might be lurking in their pumpkin patch? Pumpkin crops can be threatened by pests like squash bugs and squash vine borers, along with diseases like powdery mildew and Fusarium wilt. These spooky-looking names might sound like something out of a horror movie, but they’re real threats to crop health and yield.

Have a safe and happy Halloween, Cats!

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know cotton is useful even after its fibers are removed? Cottonseed can be processed into cooking oil, used in livestock feed, and turned into a variety of industrial products. That means cotton contributes to more than just the clothes we wear!

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know K-State has won 50 national championship titles in collegiate crops judging?

Since 1923, our Crops Judging Team has earned 34 titles at the Fall Collegiate Crops Contest and 16 at the spring NACTA Crops Contest. Students compete in everything from identifying seeds to grading grain and solving agronomic calculations.

If you’re keeping score, that’s about 50 more collegiate crops judging championship titles than KU.

Cheer loud at the game, Cats!

Happy National Farmers Day!

Today, we’re recognizing the farmers who work hard to grow the crops that feed and fuel our world.

From managing weeds and soil fertility to making planting and harvest decisions, farming takes knowledge, hard work, and a whole lot of problem-solving.

Here’s to the farmers in the fields and their whole support systems behind the scenes!

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know many cover crops produce flowers that do more than just look pretty?

Clover, radish, and mustard can add color to fields while providing food for pollinators. Cover crops also help improve soil health, reduce erosion, and protect the soil between growing seasons.

From attracting bees to protecting the ground beneath our feet, cover crops do a lot of important work beyond the growing season.

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know earthworms can help improve soil structure?

As earthworms move through the soil, they create channels that allow water and air to move more easily through the soil. These channels can also give plant roots more room to grow, making earthworms a small but important part of a healthy soil ecosystem.

Sometimes the hardest working agronomists are right under our feet!

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know soybeans are used for much more than food and animal feed?

Soybeans can be used to make everyday products like candles, printing ink, tires, and even parts of car interiors. This versatile crop shows up in more places than you might expect!

Happy International Agronomist’s Day!

From the soil beneath our feet to the crops growing across Kansas, agronomy connects science, technology, and agriculture to help farmers make informed decisions and grow the food, fiber, and fuel we rely on every day!

Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know Kansas has hundreds of different soil types across the state?

From sandy soils in western Kansas to rich prairie soils farther east, each soil has unique characteristics that influence how crops grow. Understanding these differences helps agronomists make better decisions about fertility, water, crop selection, and overall soil management.

There’s a lot more beneath our feet than meets the eye!

Have a happy and safe weekend, Cats!
