The Farzaneh Family Center serves as the hub for Iranian Studies at the University of Oklahoma.

The Farzaneh Family Center for Iranian and Persian Gulf Studies coordinates a variety of teaching, research, and outreach activities at the University of Oklahoma that explore the history, literature, language, culture, society, and politics of Iran, the Persian Gulf, and those regions historically shaped by the Persianate communities.

On October 8th the Farzaneh Family Center for Iranian and Persian Gulf Studies at the University of Oklahoma hosted a guest lecture by Dr. Mohammad Sayyadi of Florida International University titled “When States Serve Insiders: Political Privilege, Rent-Seeking, and Development in Iran and the Global South.”

The talk examined how political privilege, rent-seeking, banking networks, uncompetitive markets, and the allocation of public resources to connected groups can shape development outcomes, with a particular focus on Iran and broader comparative implications for the Global South.

The event concluded with a discussion on the relationship between states, markets, political institutions, and development.

Congratulations to Dr. Mina Raminsabet on the publication of her critical edition of Sultan Walad’s Divan, the culmination of ten years of research on manuscripts preserved in Iran and Turkey. Through careful study and comparison of these historical sources, Dr. Raminsabet reconstructed a more reliable text and shed new light on Sultan Walad’s poetry and the broader legacy of Rumi and the Mevlevi tradition. This landmark volume is an important new reference for Persian philology, manuscript studies, textual criticism, and the thirteenth-century Sufi literary tradition.
