Wrapped up Day 2 of the SCCJ Boston Experience with a wonderful dinner organized by the NU Office of Development and generous alumni. So many stories...so much advice...not enough time. Our students look forward to this dinner as part of the annual Boston Experience because of the genuineness of our alumni's interest in each of them! Thank you Tony Agnitti '84, Justin Simeone '97, Alex Kwmuntis '15, Dick Goldberg '71, Landers Symes '87, Bill Mooney '86, and Corey Touchette '23 for your incredible generosity!
And now, some of our students' reflections of the day:
"Today our group went to the BRIC and FBI Boston division and I’d say this was the best day of our trip. I say this because I met the guy who was the case agent for the Boston Marathon Bombing, my favorite part of the trip so far. He gave us an in depth presentation about it but what made it special was the fact he had first hand experience of the situation and actually interviewed one of the terrorists involved. He went step by step from the day of the bombing, collecting evidence, to the end when the case was closed. At the BRIC we mostly talked about the World Cup and how much actually went into it from a security standpoint. Most probably just look at it and think just soccer but these people at the BRIC were planning years in advance for this and I was blown away by the things they did to make sure this went smoothly. In the end this was a once in a lifetime experience and the information I received from the people I spoke to today is something that sticks with me and I will never forget." “Day two out of three of the Boston trip has already been completed and I’m not ready to leave tomorrow. The Boston Simulation was the whole reason I came to Norwich and I know I won’t regret my decision. Today we first met with BRIC and it was very engaging. One thing that really stuck out to me was seeing how many women are in my field and being able to hear how far they have come. Truly amazing people to look up to. We also visited the FBI and I enjoyed the insights on different events that have happened in our area. Especially with growing up in New England, I have heard so much in the media but I have now had the chance to pick the brains of people actually behind the scenes instead of waiting long months and reading random posts to get a sense of what was happening. I have also met so many great alumni and I am so grateful for the knowledge they have given me throughout my stay. Today was extraordinarily insightful as we took a deep dive into both the BRIC and the FBI. I was surprised by the wide range of responsibilities and operations carried out by the BRIC, as well as the extensive preparation and coordination required for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We also learned about the BRIC’s role during the tournament and the work that went into ensuring its success. At the FBI, we had the opportunity to speak with a task force officer who was involved in the Boston Marathon bombing investigation. We also gained insight into the FBI’s preparation for and ex*****on of security operations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. I was particularly astonished by the sheer number and variety of resources and specialized assets available to the FBI, and how they are deployed to address complex challenges and protect public safety. I am extremely grateful for the Norwich alumni and members of the FBI and BRIC that welcomed us to their world. We barely scratched the surface of what these incredible people see in a day." "Todays visits to the Boston Regional Intelligence Center (BRIC) and FBI Boston office have been incredibly eye opening to the capabilities and resources available to managing large scale events. The BRIC is a core component to intelligence gathering and threat assessments within the Boston Police Department. Their expertise and ability to effectively plan is how events such as the FIFA world cup are able to take place safely and without disruption. The level of planning required to be a host city is one that took years to develop with constant assessment of current and new threats such as drones and foreign actors. My greatest takeaway was from visiting the FBI office and meeting the agents who were on the ground running these operations. The FBIs capabilities continue to grow in enhancing the security and threat mitigation of public events. I found it very surprising the amount of drone interceptions they conducted and never heard about it on the news. The collaboration across the Bureau with their different specialties is a prime example of teamwork and communication. The most impactful part of this visit for me was getting to meet agents who were directly involved with the Boston Marathon Bombing case. This behind the scenes look and firsthand account of the investigation taught me that disaster can strike at any minute and when it does, you might be the one called up to take it on but never alone.
