Nursing is full of "firsts" including the first time you administer inoculations! Second year students had the chance to practice on faculty, staff and their fellow students at Monday's flu clinic. They did great and campus will (hopefully) be a healthier place this flu season. đź’‰

Hanna, a Clarkson College undergraduate nursing student, recently volunteered with the Down Syndrome Alliance of the Midlands, where she spent time with a nonverbal member of the organization. Drawing on her knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and her ability to interpret nonverbal cues, Hanna worked to understand the individual's needs and emotions. The experience brought her back to her previous career as a veterinary technician, where reading nonverbal communication was an essential part of caring for her patients.
*
Hanna is consistently committed to caring for others, whether through a gesture of understanding, a community event, or access to essential services. Clarkson College is grateful for the compassion she brings to her service and the perspective she will carry forward into her nursing career.

As a certified nursing assistant for Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Maggie saw first-hand the life-changing impact physical therapy can have in a patient’s life.

“Physical therapy can be transformative for patients,” says Maggie. “It’s so rewarding to help them regain independence, improve their quality of life, and in many cases, return to independence.”

Inspired by the experience, Maggie enrolled in the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Clarkson College.

“As a PTA, I’ll have the opportunity to work closely with patients while maintaining autonomy in clinical decision making,” she says.

Maggie says she values the close-knit learning environment Clarkson College offers.

“In my small cohort, we’ve developed strong relationships and a supportive dynamic. I’ve also appreciated how invested the instructors are, not only in our academic success, but in our well-being as individuals.”

As an employee of one of Clarkson College’s community partners, Vetter Senior Living, Buhr received a scholarship.

Way to go, Maggie!

When Danna Swartz visited Ethiopia seven years ago, she noticed she didn’t see many women.

The Clarkson College assistant professor soon learned the reason why: when women in rural parts of South Sudan, Kenya and Ethiopia were menstruating, they were homebound. It forced many girls to drop out of school.

She started a program to teach women how to sew reusable menstrual pads, and to educate women and men about a woman’s anatomy and reproduction.

For her trip this past August, she brought something special. A custom 3D image of a woman’s anatomy, created by the 3D Printing and Training Center Team at Clarkson College.

“Having the model allowed my message to come across more clearly, and it generated a new level of curiosity among the students,” Ms. Swartz says.

She left the 3D model in Ethiopia, to help the local volunteers educate more young people with this life-changing information.

Thank you Ms. Swartz and the 3D Printing Team for making a difference in thousands of lives!
