Vinh Pham ‘28 was a Vision Zero Intern with the City of Philadelphia Office of Multimodal Planning during the summer of 2026.

Vinh shares his experience:

“I attended public meetings, created GIS maps for the Annual Report and Capital Plan, conducted traffic counts, learned more about different road safety designs, and helped residents learn more and engage further about Philly’s Vision Zero campaign.

The most exciting part was sharpening my Excel and GIS skills, learning more about the different shortcuts and tools to speed up my work. Hearing how my work made an impact, such as creating talking points for presentations and reports.”

A: FALSE Most students find their direction through the work, not before it. Reaching out to a lab because the topic sounds interesting is a completely legitimate starting point.

Professors would rather take someone curious and willing to learn than someone who has it all figured out.

Kudzaishe Chaonwa '28 was an Undergraduate Clinical Research Assistant with Butler Hospital, Care New England, during the summer of 2026.

Kudzaishe shares his experience:

"This summer, I was a Clinical Research Assistant at the TMS Clinic at Butler Hospital with the Project MOM Lab, working on a clinical trial using non-invasive TMS brain stimulation for treating postpartum OCD. My day-to-day was incredibly hands-on: I worked directly with our patients, managed the primary research voicemail line, and oversaw the cross-institutional recruitment pipeline between Butler and Women & Infants Hospital. On the clinical and technical side, I got to train on fMRI brain scanning and spent time shadowing Dr. Megan Kulak, which gave me an amazing, firsthand look at the intersection of neuroscience and maternal psychiatric care.

The most challenging aspect was stepping into a fast-paced clinical environment and handling real patient interaction from day one. Managing the primary study voicemail and coordinating recruitment meant I was often the first point of contact for postpartum mothers seeking help. Overcoming the initial learning curve of clinical logistics and protocol compliance helped me build immense confidence in my professional and clinical communication skills.

This experience absolutely solidified my passion for clinical neuroscience and maternal mental health. Working directly with mothers experiencing postpartum OCD and seeing the potential of non-invasive brain stimulation firsthand has inspired me to continue pursuing research and clinical care in this specific field as I look toward my post-graduate plans."
