We are excited to welcome Janet Ray, Ed.D., to the Johnson & Wales University Educational Leadership Program as a new adjunct faculty member! Dr. Ray will be teaching Nature of Higher Education to our Higher Education cohort.

A proud JWU alumna, Dr. Ray earned her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Johnson & Wales University, where her dissertation explored the experiences and adjustment of first-year international students in the United States. She also holds an M.B.A. in Global Business Leadership and a B.S. in Travel Tourism Management from JWU.

Dr. Ray brings extensive experience in higher education leadership, teaching, student success, and academic administration. She currently serves as Interim Dean of Language, Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Bristol Community College, following six years as Dean of the Attleboro Campus. Her career also includes leadership and teaching roles at Providence College, as well as experience supporting students, faculty, and international education across multiple institutions.

As an educator, Dr. Ray emphasizes student-centered learning, academic excellence, inclusion, reflective practice, and connecting theory and research to the complex realities of educational leadership. Her extensive experience makes her a wonderful addition to our Higher Education cohort.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Ray back to JWU in this new role and look forward to the experience, perspective, and leadership she will bring to our students.

As we close out the first week of classes for our MAT and M.Ed. students, we’re getting ready to welcome our Ed.D. students for their first class weekend!

There’s always something especially exciting about this time of year as our programs come to life and our students begin or continue their journeys together.

One of the most meaningful parts of our School of Education programs is the cohort experience. Students don’t simply move through a program alongside one another, they become a team. They learn together, encourage one another, celebrate milestones, navigate challenges, and build relationships that extend far beyond the classroom.

This week, our year 2 MAT students left a special message for our incoming MAT students, reminding them that they’re not on this journey alone. It’s a simple message, but it captures what the cohort model is all about: support, connection, and community.

To our MAT, M.Ed., and Ed.D. students, we’re so excited to see all that this year holds for you. Here’s to learning together, supporting one another, and growing throughout the journey!

From earning her Bachelor's in Culinary Arts to earning her Master of Arts in Teaching in Culinary Arts Education, Julia Alfonzetti ’26 has continued to grow her passion for food, learning, and sharing her knowledge with others all here at Johnson & Wales University! Now, she’s taking the next step in her JWU journey!

We’re excited to congratulate Julia on her new role as an adjunct faculty member in JWU’s Center for Food Innovation & Technology (CFIT), where she’ll be teaching CUL 1100: Introduction to Culinary Skills and Techniques throughout the fall semester.

For Julia, culinary arts is more than preparing food. She’s passionate about experiencing food in creative and innovative ways, expanding her knowledge, and sharing what she learns with others. She sees cooking as an ever-evolving art that brings together creativity, culture, technology, and experience.

Please join us in congratulating Julia on this exciting new chapter and welcoming her to the JWU faculty community! We can’t wait to see the impact she’ll make inspiring the next generation of culinary professionals.

Ida Pappas, PhD. brings decades of K–12 leadership and classroom experience to the Johnson & Wales University MAT and M.Ed. programs. As a Curriculum Coordinator for Holliston Public Schools, she leads district-wide curriculum initiatives, facilitates professional development, and supports educators at every stage of their careers. Her work includes training teachers in Understanding by Design, leading interdisciplinary and project-based learning initiatives, and helping articulate curriculum across more than 110 courses.

Outside of education, Dr. Pappas is an artist, builder, and gardener. From designing stained glass windows and restoring a 180-year-old farmhouse to cultivating gardens, orchards, bee hives, and native woodlands, she enjoys creating meaningful spaces with her hands.

What drives Dr. Pappas most is her passion for the arts, the environment, and building community. In the classroom, she is dedicated to truly knowing, seeing, and hearing her students, helping them discover their strengths while preparing them for the realities of today's K–12 classrooms. Her daily work alongside teachers and school leaders ensures that every lesson is grounded in current practice, empathy, and the evolving needs of educators.

We're grateful to have faculty like Dr. Pappas whose expertise, mentorship, and passion inspire the next generation of teachers.

Tony Alexandre, M.Ed is making a meaningful impact in education through his work as Director of School Operations at Achievement First Rhode Island, where he serves as part of a leadership team dedicated to creating exceptional learning experiences for students. His commitment to education is rooted in a passion for helping children reach their full potential and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Reflecting on his M.Ed. experience at Johnson & Wales University, Tony says one lesson has remained with him throughout his career: the importance of teaching the whole child. He believes educators should recognize each student's strengths while intentionally supporting areas for growth, creating learning environments where every child feels valued and empowered to succeed.

Tony's dedication to education continues to inspire those around him, demonstrating the lasting impact educators can have both inside and outside the classroom.
