🙏 Czechia will provide CZK 2.5 million in humanitarian aid to Nepal following devastating flash floods and landslides near the border with Tibet.

Nepalese police say more than 600 people have died and 2,426 remain missing after Wednesday’s disaster, which was apparently triggered by a glacier collapse.

The Czech Foreign Ministry says it has no information about any Czech citizens among the dead or missing.

Nepal's finance minister has estimated the country will need between $4 billion and $5 billion to rebuild the country after the devastating flood.

As well as wiping away homes, the flood has destroyed key infrastructure like roads and bridges.

A painting of the death mask of Jan Palach was unveiled on Friday at a memorial to the young man who set himself on fire in connection with the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia that began on August 21, 1968. The work is by the UK-resident visual artist Hynek Martinec, who attended the presentation ceremony in Všetaty, the Central Bohemian village where Palach grew up.

Czech Radio’s international broadcasting service was once one of the main sources of information about Czechoslovakia abroad, and it annually received thousands of letters from listeners the world over. A portion of this rich, multilingual archive, currently on display in the foyer of Czech Radio, reflects the tragic events of 1968.

August 21, 1968, went down in Czechoslovak history as the day that Soviet-led Warsaw Pact troops crushed the Prague Spring reforms and the hopes of millions of people yearning for freedom and democracy. At a solemn ceremony outside the Czech Radio building, political leaders laid wreaths to honor those who lost their lives in the invasion and highlighted the role of free media – then and now.

🕍 More than 60 synagogues and Jewish cemeteries across the Czech Republic will open their doors to visitors on Sunday, August 9, as part of the annual Jewish Monuments Day.

The event will offer free entry or admission for a voluntary contribution and will include both restored landmarks and sites that are normally closed to the public.

The ninth edition of the event will give visitors the opportunity to explore historic Jewish heritage sites throughout the country, including the synagogue in Neveklov in the Benešov region, which recently underwent restoration work on its ceiling.

This year’s program will also include several Jewish cemeteries that are rarely accessible to the public. Visitors will be able to enter cemeteries in Čížkovice in the Litoměřice region, Mirotice in the Písek region and Přehořov near Tábor.

The complete list of participating locations has been published on the official Jewish Monuments Day website. Most sites will be open from 10:00 to 17:00.
