In honor of 2026 being the 50 year anniversary of the EKU Research Center for Special Collections and Archives, we want to look back on where it all began. Our very first “processed” collection is the Robert R. Martin Presidential Records - 1976A001. A processed collection refers to a collection that has been organized, preserved, and prepared for access by our archive patrons.

A large majority of the 395 boxes comprising the papers of Robert R. Martin is devoted to official matters concerning his sixteen year tenure (1960-1976) as sixth president of Eastern Kentucky State College (until 1966) and Eastern Kentucky University. The first alumnus to serve as President of Eastern Kentucky University, Robert Richard Martin presided over a period of unprecedented growth for his Alma Mater. In Martin's sixteen year tenure, the University grew from an institution devoted mainly to teacher training to a multi-purpose educational complex serving over four times the number of students who had been enrolled when Martin was inaugurated.

This first collection contains organizational records related to various national and state organizations in which the University held membership; Board of Regents materials; academic, business, and public affairs; and general, personal, and speech series.

Because of the extensive impact that Martin had on our university, you may find him in many other collections in our repository. He is featured heavily in the EKU Photograph collection. He is mentioned in and featured in many oral history interviews. His personal papers, 2022A002, contain a deeper insight into his personal life and his work as Senator. Martin maintained a lifelong passion for education, civic service, and history that is evident in each of these collections.

Electronic Records Day is observed on October 1 this year, in an effort to bring awareness to the importance of managing and maintaining your digital records.

There are many risks associated with the upkeep of electronic records that most tend to overlook. For instance, as the technology we use to store and access digital files progresses and older forms become obsolete, you may lose access to your files. Or if left unchecked for too long, you may find that your electronic records have degraded or corrupted.

This is why it is so important to keep up with your electronic records, rather than assuming you will always have access to them or they are safe because they’re on your computer. Here are a few quick tips to help you get started in managing your electronic records.

1) Migrate your files to new storage media on an as-needed basis to ensure you won’t lose access due to technological obsolescence.
2) Develop an electronic filing system that works for you to keep files with similar subjects and retention requirements together. This will enable faster access and retrieval later, as well as easier weeding when retention requirements have been met.
3) Have back-ups of important records ready and accessible in case something should happen to your current copies.

Happy October, Colonels! October is American Archives Month. Each October, we like to highlight our university archive and the importance of archives in preserving our heritage and history. Our goal for the month is to share with you what archives are, how you can use them, and how you can engage with us throughout the year!
Here are some things you can look forward to on this page for Archives Month 2026:
-Electronic Records Day 2026!
-”Archive Finds”: This series will highlight some of the various interesting discoveries we have made while working in the archives. There will be a variety of materials featured, and who knows? Maybe you’ll find something new!
-What are the archives? How can they be used? We’ll answer this and more in our mini-blog! Stick around to learn about our specific archive and the ways that you can use our materials that may not necessarily be tied to your history project.
-Ask an Archivist Day is October 14th! You can submit your questions here or over on our Instagram (). Ask us anything! You can ask about staff, specific collections, our books/manuscripts…anything! We can’t wait to see what you have in mind!
-Our Main Event! Join us on October 22, from 4-6pm! We will be celebrating EKU Research Center for Special Collections and Archives 50th anniversary by featuring items from our collections, hosting a panel discussion on the history and use of our archive, and more!

…And so much more! We will be sharing photographs, throwbacks, and more throughout the month to celebrate our collections and our work. We also will have a new display up - come check it out!
