It’s another and on this day, September 3, in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Wilderness Act. The landmark federal law that created the National Wilderness Preservation System and authorized Congress to designate wilderness areas. We have several images of national parks, and Lyndon B. Johnson in our collections, and we have selected a few to show off today.

“A wilderness is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain…”

Today is so for we have chosen some images from our digital collections that we feel best represents this holiday. Did you know that Eastern’s first basketball team, established in 1907, was a women’s team? Or that Eastern’s second president was a woman, named Mary C. Roark? It’s again, and this week we wanted to do a snapshot of student life from the 1940s. What’s your favorite decade? Which one should we do next?

For the 250th, the Society of American Archivists created an online repository that tells the story of our country with documents from institutions across the US and internationally. Our contribution to this project is an image from the Robert Bagby Collection. The image is of protesters at the Bluegrass Chemical Demilitarization Community Outreach office. We chose this image to best represent the SAA 250 for the 250th theme “Unfinished Revolutions.”

We're back with a special post. On Saturday, we will be at Fort Boonesborough State Park for the Gathering of Descendants event. We chose some images of the dedication ceremony of the park and the construction of the replica.
